The Naturfreunde forest inn in Hochburg-Ach is located at an elevation of 450 meters above sea level, about seventy meters above the Salzach River, directly opposite the Bavarian border town of Burghausen. From the terrace, guests have a magnificent view of Burghausen's picturesque old town and the imposing castle complex. Lodge owner Marek Duda opens his forest inn Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursdays to Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Closed on Wednesdays.

The narrow, stepped Schmallerl-Steig path is the shortest, albeit steepest, connection between the Acher district of Duttendorf and the Old Bridge over the Salzach River to Burghausen. From this romantic path, which is also part of the Upper Austrian Marien-Wanderweg (Mary's Trail), magnificent views of the Salzach River, the old town, and Burghausen Castle repeatedly offer themselves. The path climbs the approximately seventy-meter-high steep bank of the Salzach River just before the Salzach Gorge. As early as 1548, the Burghausen treasurer recorded expenses for equipping the "Schmalerl" with railings and steps.

I walk here almost every day with my dog, unless there is high water. With beautiful views of Austria, the castle or Marienberg, the path is a good way to get to Raitenhaslach or Burghausen's old town in a relaxed manner. There are a few benches and, depending on the water level, gravel banks too.

The Burghausen Bräugartl is one of the most idyllic corners of the city. Located in the old town directly on the high bank of the Salzach, the enchanted little park with its fruit trees and the slowly babbling Moosbach offers its visitors the peace and relaxation they desire. Bräugartl guests can sit down on unusual seating. There are play equipment and a tree house for the younger visitors to the Bräugartl. A wrought iron gate connects the Bräugartl to the grounds of the Burghausen youth hostel. Anyone who wants to can reach the Burghausen river bank and the In den Grüben promenade in no time at all. I enjoyed the panorama of Burghausen and good food on the covered terrace of the forest restaurant on the high bank. I have known this place since I was a child. Back then it was called the Naturfreunde-Haus. The Naturfreunde banner is still there, though.
