The Juncal viewpoint is located right near the starting point at Pico do Areeiro and immediately offers one of the most expansive views over the eastern part of Madeira. From this plateau, on clear days, you can look all the way across the jagged mountain ridges to the dry peninsula of Ponta de São Lourenço and the ocean. A fun fact is that 'juncal' refers to the rushes and hardy grasses that survive here at high altitudes in the sparse, volcanic soil. The viewpoint is also a fantastic place to watch the sunrise, when the first rays of sunlight slowly bring the deep valleys of Fajã da Nogueira out of the shadows.

Great view over the harbor and the city of Funchal. Along the cable car and also from the Botanical Garden there are opportunities for this panorama.

This viewpoint is also worth seeing for sunrise. However, the path from the parking lot at Rio Arieiro to the start of the Ninho da Manta trail was completely icy when we were there. It only became passable once the sun thawed the ice.

Another highlight along the route. However, immediately afterward, the path is blocked by an iron gate. The path has collapsed, and there was a forest fire. According to unconfirmed reports, it is scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2026.
