The view from this high plateau around the Millstätter Alpe is simply gigantic. In May we still had patches of snow in the sunshine and you feel like you are in another world up there. The dry, short grass crunches with the lichen under your shoes. The landscape seems rough with its rugged rocks, some of which look like barrows and are inhabited by marmots. I felt like I was on a tundra expedition. Wonderful!

Quite busy as there is a cable car going up here, but the view is still manageable!

Visitors frequently enjoy the Granattor Monument, an impressive iron passage filled with ruby-red garnet rocks, offering panoramic views. Other highly-rated spots include the Falkertspitz Summit, known for its extensive views of the Nock Mountains, and the Stana Mandl Cairn on Lammersdorfer Mountain, which provides a wonderful vista of the Millstätter See.
Yes, the area offers several family-friendly options. The lakes Brennsee and Afritzer See are perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and other water sports. In winter, they transform into natural ice rinks. While not a natural monument itself, the Kaiserburg Mountain Station is a good starting point for family-friendly hikes and offers amenities.
The region is rich in unique geological formations. The Granattor Monument is a prime example, showcasing a massive deposit of garnet rocks. The entire Millstätter Alpe, where the Granattor is located, is known as the “Realm of the flint of love” due to its garnet deposits. The Nockberge Biosphere Reserve also features distinctive 'Nocken' or domed peaks, a geological rarity.
The area around Feld am See is excellent for various outdoor activities. You can find numerous cycling routes, including easy loops around the lakes and more challenging tours like the Millstätter Hut – Millstätter Lake loop. For running, there are trails around Brennsee and Afritzer See. Mountain biking enthusiasts can explore routes like the Feldpannalm-Tour or the Alter Almweg Trail. You can find more details on these activities in the cycling guide, running guide, and MTB guide for Feld am See.
Absolutely. Many natural monuments double as excellent viewpoints. The Granattor Monument offers panoramic views, while the Falkertspitz Summit provides extensive vistas of the Nock Mountains. The Stana Mandl Cairn on Lammersdorfer Mountain is also highly praised for its views of the Millstätter See. Additionally, the Millstätter Alpe Plateau offers gigantic 360-degree views.
The best time largely depends on your preferred activities. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for hiking and cycling, with vibrant foliage or blooming alpine flowers. Summer is ideal for water sports on Brennsee and Afritzer See, and for high-altitude hikes. Winter transforms the landscape into a snowy wonderland, perfect for ice skating on the frozen lakes or winter hiking.
Many natural areas and hiking trails around Feld am See are dog-friendly, especially in the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve. However, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or grazing livestock, and to check specific regulations for individual attractions or protected areas before your visit.
While popular spots like the Granattor can attract visitors, exploring the broader Nockberge Biosphere Reserve via the Nockalmstraße can lead to quieter trails and viewpoints. Early mornings or weekdays during the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) are generally the best times to experience the natural monuments with fewer crowds.
The Nockberge Biosphere Reserve is distinctive for its gently undulating 'Nocken' or domed peaks, which present a softer, more rounded alpine landscape compared to the jagged peaks found in other parts of the Alps. This unique geological formation, combined with sparse forests and high-altitude lakes, creates a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including marmots, offering a different kind of alpine experience.
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from summits like Falkertspitz Summit and the Stana Mandl Cairn. The unique geological features, such as the garnet rocks at the Granattor Monument, are also a major draw. Many appreciate the diverse hiking opportunities and the serene beauty of the lakes Brennsee and Afritzer See for relaxation and water sports.
While Feld am See itself has public transport connections, direct access to all natural monuments can be limited. Many of the prominent natural monuments, especially those higher in the mountains like the Granattor or Falkertspitz, are best reached by car to a starting point, followed by a hike. However, local buses might connect to trailheads or the Nockalmstraße during peak season. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for specific routes.
