I found people on horseback, me and other cyclists got stuck as they followed the same route as us.

Superb Singletrack, if you are getting off Carretto wheels you have to go through here. Fast and technical enough, suitable for beginners but lots of fun for those who know how to push. Pay attention to the ground which in some places is very soft and sandy, making you lose the front easily.

What a departure! On a bumpy slab farm track, you'll race through the middle of an old lava flow. Abgefahrener it is hardly. When I was here, dark storm clouds created an almost eerie mood. Hammer.

While the immediate urban area of Catania has limited purpose-built bike parks, the broader Province offers excellent options. The most prominent is Bike Park Sicily in Mineo, located about 30 minutes from Catania. It features over 15 km of trails for all skill levels, an Olympic-sized pump track, rentals, and additional amenities like a swimming pool and dining.
Mount Etna offers a unique and challenging environment for mountain biking with diverse terrain and stunning volcanic scenery. You'll find trails ranging from 'smooth flowy blues' to 'steep technical blacks', including singletrack descents and routes that traverse old lava flows. Notable trails include Singletrack Descent in Parco dell'Etna, StumpJumper Trail, and Volcano Downhill.
Yes, both the dedicated bike park and some Etna trails cater to various skill levels. Bike Park Sicily in Mineo has trails from 'smooth flowy blues' upwards. Around Etna, trails like the Singletrack Descent in Parco dell'Etna are described as suitable for beginners while still being fun for experienced riders. The Etna's Altomontana Slope is also considered a moderate ride.
The region's volcanic landscape provides a truly unique biking experience. Around Mount Etna, you can ride through diverse terrain, including trails that traverse old lava flows, offering a 'bike surfing in lava sand' experience. The Volcano Downhill trail, for instance, races through the middle of an old lava flow.
Bike Park Sicily is a comprehensive facility. It offers bike and e-moto rentals, dedicated pedal-up tracks, and secure bike storage. Beyond cycling, you'll find various sports fields (tennis, basketball, beach volleyball, soccer), a swimming pool, and dining options including a bar, pizzeria, and restaurant.
The region generally offers good cycling conditions for much of the year. However, for mountain biking, spring and autumn typically provide the most pleasant temperatures and stable weather. Summer can be very hot, especially at lower altitudes, while winter might bring colder temperatures and snow at higher elevations on Etna.
Bike Park Sicily in Mineo is a great option for families, offering trails for all skill levels, including easier 'blue' trails, along with a pump track and other recreational facilities like a swimming pool. For general cycling, some routes around Catania are suitable for families, though dedicated family-friendly mountain bike trails are more limited to specific parks or easier sections of Etna trails.
Beyond dedicated bike parks, the Catania region offers a wide array of cycling opportunities. You can explore various road cycling routes, such as those found in the Road Cycling Routes in Catania guide, or general cycling tours detailed in the Cycling in Catania guide. For more challenging off-road experiences, check out the MTB Trails in Catania guide, which includes routes like the Etna Marathon and Etna's Altomontana Slope.
Trails around Etna can be diverse. Some sections, like the Singletrack Descent in Parco dell'Etna, can have very soft and sandy ground, requiring careful handling. Other trails may feature jumps or challenging visibility. Always be prepared for varied terrain, including technical sections, roots, and significant elevation changes. Some trails might also be shared with other users, such as horses, as noted on the Woops Descent Singletrack.
Catania has seen the inauguration of urban cycling paths, such as the one connecting Piazza Duomo to the lungomare della Plaja. However, these have faced criticism regarding their design, materials, and functionality, including issues with flooding and safety concerns. For dedicated recreational cycling, the specialized facilities and natural trails outside the immediate city center are generally preferred.
Visitors highly appreciate the unique experiences offered. The Singletrack Descent in Parco dell'Etna is praised as 'superb' and fun for all skill levels. The StumpJumper Trail is considered 'one of the best mtb trails on Etna'. The Volcano Downhill is noted for its 'abgefahrener' (crazy) experience racing through old lava flows, creating an 'eerie mood' under certain conditions.
