The Schleier Falls are very beautiful and the difficult path through the Ammer Gorge is worth it. Please note: extremely sensitive area - entering the Schleier Falls and possibly "showering" in the waterfall causes damage that nature will take a very, very long time to repair. So: it's OK to look, but please don't enter!

The Osterseen are a group of bodies of water south of Lake Starnberg in the Weilheim-Schongau district in Upper Bavaria. The southern and central Osterseen with the Großer Ostersee belong to the municipality of Iffeldorf, the northern Osterseen from the Stechsee and the Frechensee to the municipality of Seeshaupt. Iffeldorf is around five kilometers by road northwest of Penzberg, 20 km southeast of the district town of Weilheim and 50 km south-southwest of Munich city centre. The 20 larger individual lakes have a total area of around 225 hectares and an average depth of a good nine metres. The Kleiner Gröbensee and about 15 unnamed smaller lakes, each with an area of only a few hundred square meters, are not included here, seven of which are already heavily silted up. The Osterseen and the silting-up zone bordering to the west are located in the landscape protection area "Protection of the Osterseen and their surroundings in the communities of Frauenrain, Iffeldorf and Seeshaupt". The area received this protection status as early as 1955. Since 1981 there has also been the Osterseen nature reserve with an area of 1,083 hectares. About a third of this is on the surface of the water bodies, 494 hectares are high, low and intermediate moors, 172 hectares consist of semi-natural mixed forest. Around five percent of the Osterseen landscape consists of riparian regions, silted-up areas and meadows. The nature reserve is divided into three parts, which are separated from each other by the train line of the Kochelseebahn and the state road 2063: Südliche Osterseen, Nordliche Osterseen and Frechensee. In May 1997, the Osterseen were reported to Brussels as a SPA (European bird sanctuary) and FFH area according to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive. In addition to the Eggstätt-Hemhofer lake district and the Seeoner lakes, the area is the largest and most structured icefall landscape in the Bavarian Alpine foothills. The complex of boggy and nutrient-poor lakes, low, transitional and raised bogs alongside bog and swamp forests with its extraordinary diversity of species in the networked habitats, biotopes and ecological niches is of Europe-wide importance for basic scientific research. The beauty of this landscape has always attracted artists. The painter Georg Schrimpf in particular, a main representative of the New Objectivity art movement, created several oil paintings of the Osterseen in the 1930s. The stairway that leads up here from the gorge is only for sure-footed walkers (see signs), with some very high steps, slightly exposed and extremely greasy when wet. The T1 rating (walk) in the komoot map is definitely wrong. The whole path in the gorge is T2 (hiking trail), this place is more like T3 (hiking trail with easy difficulty).

Weilheim-Schongau is rich in geological monuments, known as geotopes. You can explore the unique "ice-decay landscape" of the Great Ostersee, a group of around 20 small lakes formed by melting glaciers. The Ammer Gorge at the Echelsbach Bridge showcases interbedded sandstones with ripple marks, while the Eberfing Drumlin Field features elongated glacial hills with wetlands and fens. Another interesting site is the "Steinerne Rinne" (Stone Channel), a porous tufa formation created by calc-secreting spring waters.
Yes, many natural monuments in Weilheim-Schongau are suitable for families. The Great Ostersee area offers hiking and a small beach for swimming. The View of the Großer Ostersee and the Alps is also family-friendly and even wheelchair accessible. Other options include the Brettleweg in the Wiesfilz moorland and the Ammer River Trail, both noted as family-friendly.
The region offers a variety of hiking trails. For instance, you can find moderate mountain hikes in the area, such as the 'Musikpunkt Peißenberg – View from Hohenpeißenberg loop from Peißenberg'. There are also specific waterfall hikes, like the 'Kalkofensteg Wooden Bridge – Ammerschlucht Gorge Trail loop from Rottenbuch'. For more options, explore the Hiking in Weilheim-Schongau guide, the Mountain Hikes in Weilheim-Schongau guide, or the Waterfall hikes in Weilheim-Schongau guide.
For stunning vistas, visit the View of the Großer Ostersee and the Alps, which offers panoramic views over the lake with the Alpine panorama in the background. The Hoher Peißenberg Summit also provides fantastic all-round views of the Ammersee, Starnberger See, and the Alps. Additionally, the Kalkofensteg Wooden Bridge offers views over the Ammer River and its historic structure.
Yes, the Brettleweg in the Wiesfilz moorland is described as a special experience in winter, with its barren vegetation. The moor is also less dangerous due to persistent frost, making it a unique winter destination.
The Weilheim-Schongau district is an excellent place to observe glacial formations. The Osterseen area is a prominent "ice-decay landscape" and a National Geotope, showcasing various typical landscape forms of the glacial series. The Eberfing Drumlin Field, with its elongated hills and wetlands, also provides insight into glacial processes. Additionally, large erratic boulders (Findlinge) like the "Irrblock im Ortsteil Gruiwang" are tangible evidence of the Würmian Lech Glacier's activity.
Absolutely. The Kalkofensteg Wooden Bridge is located in a gorge over the Ammer River, with gravel banks nearby. Further along the Ammer, you can discover the Schleierfälle — Waterfalls on the Ammer River, a challenging but rewarding natural monument. The Ammer River Trail also offers opportunities to experience the river's natural beauty.
The natural monuments in Weilheim-Schongau offer beauty throughout the year. Spring and summer are ideal for hiking, cycling, and enjoying the lakes, with lush greenery and pleasant temperatures. Autumn brings vibrant colors to the forests, while winter offers a unique, serene experience, especially in areas like the Wiesfilz moorland. However, some areas, particularly river islands and gravel banks near the Lech River, have entry bans during bird breeding season (March 1 to August 31) to protect nesting birds.
Yes, several natural monuments in the region are also protected nature reserves. The Osterseen area is the largest nature reserve in the district. The Ammerschlucht (Ammer Gorge) is also a significant nature reserve, protecting a diverse riverine ecosystem. The Ammer Valley in the area of Ammerleite and Talbach Slopes is another large nature reserve, preserving the natural beauty of the Ammer River. The Eibenwald bei Paterzell (Yew Forest) protects a rare and ecologically important habitat.
The diverse landscapes of Weilheim-Schongau support rich biodiversity. In the Eberfing Drumlin Field, you can find extensively managed, species-rich fens with beautiful orchids. The Hangquellmoore (Slope Mires) are valuable for observing specialized wetland flora. Nature reserves along the Lech River are vital habitats, especially for birds, though access to islands and gravel banks is restricted during breeding season to protect them. The Ammer Valley also features diverse mountain forests in a remarkably natural state.
Yes, the Hoher Peißenberg Summit is a prominent natural landmark that also features a pilgrimage church, making it a significant historical and religious site. The Kalkofensteg Wooden Bridge is also considered a historical site within a natural gorge setting.
Visitors frequently praise the stunning views, especially the Alpine panoramas from spots like the View of the Großer Ostersee and the Alps. The tranquility and natural beauty of areas like the Osterseen are highly appreciated for extensive discovery tours. The unique geological formations, such as the Ammer Gorge and the historic Kalkofensteg Wooden Bridge, also receive positive feedback for their scenic appeal and opportunities for breaks on gravel banks.
