View of Walzin Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the river bank you can look across to the “Château de Walzin”, which sits on a steep limestone cliff high above the Lesse. The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited, but the view of the fairytale castle alone is reason enough for this detour.

Pont-à-Lesse Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle was built around 1800 by the lord of Walzin, a part of Dinant. It was known at the time as the 'Château de la Lesse' and consisted of a main building and a tower, both with 2 floors. Maid Marie-Anne Damsel de Colnet was the first to move into the castle. It then passed into the hands of Ferdinand Louis de Villers-Masbourg, who passed it on to his three children in 1844.

In 1868, the Villers-Masbourg family sold the castle to Marguerite Offerman, wife of Frédéric Guillaume Brugmann. In 1850, this Brussels banker had already become the owner of the famous castle of Walzin, which towers on a rock above the Lesse. The castle of Pont-à-Lesse is in a very bad state and son Alfred Maurice Brugmann has it completely renovated. The renovation will take several years.

In 1914, the castle was completely renovated again by grandson Frédéric Brugmann de Walzin, who added a third floor. He renamed the castle 'Castle of Pont-à-Lesse'.
In 1948 the castle is sold and it becomes a holiday center. Since then, the Castel has been a renowned hotel.

The castle was built around 1800 by the Lord of Walzin, a district of Dinant. At that time, it was called "Château de la Lesse" and consisted of a main building and a two-story tower. Lady Marie-Anne Damsel de Colnet was the castle's first resident. It then passed into the possession of Ferdinand Louis de Villers-Masbourg, who passed it on to his three children in 1844. In 1868, the Villers-Masbourg family sold the castle to Marguerite Offerman, the wife of Frédéric Guillaume Brugmann. This Brussels banker had already become the owner of the famous Château de Walzin, perched on a rock above the Lesse River, in 1850. Castel Pont-à-Lesse subsequently fell into very poor condition, so his son, Alfred Maurice Brugmann, had it completely rebuilt over many years. In 1914, his grandson, Frédéric Brugmann de Walzin, extensively renovated the castle again, adding a third floor. He renamed it "Kasteel van Pont-à-Lesse." In 1948, the castle was sold and converted into a holiday resort. Since then, it has been a renowned three-star hotel. Source: https://casteldepontalesse.be/en/home/history

The castle is located in the charming Ardennes landscape between Waulsort and Dinant, directly on the banks of the Meuse River. It was built on the ruins of an old fortress that was destroyed in 1554. Originally a Renaissance-style manor house, it was enlarged and modified in the 17th and 18th centuries. This former summer residence of the Counts de Beaufort-Spontin boasts a refined and cosmopolitan interior. Its salons were furnished and decorated by the 20 generations who have lived there…here, history comes alive in a magnificent setting. The castle's beautiful classical gardens and their orange trees, some 300 years old, are considered an exceptional heritage of the Parks & Gardens of Wallonia. Their design was inspired by the work of Louis XIV's gardeners at Versailles. Stroll through the labyrinth of arcades and head to the foot of the charming Trianon. The well-structured beauty of these gardens offers a distinctive contrast to the wooded slopes and steep cliffs surrounding the valley. Dogs are allowed here, on a leash, and only in the gardens, not in the castle building. Source: https://visitwallonia.de/de/produit/schloss-freyr-und-seine-garten/9559?cookie_lang=de

The Château de Beauraing is located in the park of Castel Sainte-Marie, a few hundred metres from the city centre. It is possible to enter the park to view the exterior of the towers, walls and outbuildings of the castle, but it is not possible to visit the interior. This old castle was built in the 13th century. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. However, it was the family of the Duke of Osuna, in the 19th century, who gave it a sumptuous appearance. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed by fire in 1889. Since then, it has only been partially renovated.
