La Palma is a great place to visit, and this itinerary is fantastic (including the "other" waterfall suggested by SiMone above). But the Cascada de Los Colores is a tourist trap. Actually: - It is not colored. - it is not natural, but a small, insignificant artificial dam - Looks 30 m high, but is actually only 3.5 m. - There is little water most of the year. That doesn't mean it's not worth the hike! It is just good to go there and come back and enjoy the beautiful trip. But do not expect to see such a magical natural phenomenon. WARNING: in some sections, the route moves away from the bottom of the barranco to avoid dangerous areas due to the possibility of rockfall and sudden flooding. Be extremely careful in these sections, especially if the weather has been bad or if you notice bad weather upstream. Finally, there is a section overhung by a large traverse rock that is difficult to pass, especially uphill. Better to transit by the suggested route, especially if there is a lot of water.

The actual waterfall currently (June) has little water. We discovered a good alternative. Shortly before the destination at the fork to the Cascada, we followed the left stream path and then found this wonderful place 😊. It did involve a bit of climbing, but it wasn't difficult.

One of the biggest tourist attractions of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park that, however, became it accidentally, since initially it was just a containment dam for the waters of the Caldera. But the iron colored its walls and together with the numerous algae that also cover them, gave rise to this very special place.

La Palma offers several distinctive waterfall experiences. The Colorful Waterfall, also known as Cascada de Colores, within the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, is famous for its vibrant hues created by high iron content. Another must-see is the Los Tilos Waterfall, nestled in the ancient laurel forest, where bathing is permitted. For an adventurous trek, the Marcos y Cordero route features multiple cascades and water tunnels.
Yes, the Los Tilos Waterfall offers an easy hike suitable for families, leading through a magical laurel forest. The path often includes illuminated tunnels, adding an adventurous element. While the hike to Cascada de Colores can be longer, families with older children might enjoy the unique geological features. Always check trail conditions and difficulty before heading out with children.
The best time to visit La Palma's waterfalls is generally during the cooler, wetter months, typically from autumn through spring (October to May). During this period, the waterfalls carry more water, making them more impressive. However, the island's mild climate means they can be enjoyed year-round, though some may have less water in the drier summer months.
Hiking trails to the waterfalls vary in difficulty and scenery. The path to the Colorful Waterfall involves a beautiful hike through a barranco in the Caldera de Taburiente. The Los Tilos Waterfall is reached via an easier path through a dense laurel forest, including tunnels. The Marcos y Cordero route is known for its 'Indiana Jones' feel, with tunnels and abundant water, offering a more challenging and immersive experience.
Access to certain areas within the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, including some trailheads for the Colorful Waterfall, may require permits or prior booking, especially for vehicle access to specific points like Los Brecitos. It's advisable to check the official National Park website or local visitor centers for the most current information on permits and access restrictions before your visit.
Public transport options are available to reach some hiking areas. For instance, there are bus routes that can take you closer to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park access points or the Los Tilos visitor center. However, direct access to all trailheads might be limited, and some routes may require a combination of public transport and walking or a taxi. Check local bus schedules for routes connecting Los Llanos de Aridane to key hiking areas.
Yes, for experienced trekkers, the Marcos y Cordero route offers a challenging and rewarding experience with multiple waterfalls and tunnels. Additionally, the View of the Fondada Waterfall, located in the rear part of the caldera, is described as challenging to ascend and is less frequented by tourists, offering tranquility and impressive views of one of La Palma's highest waterfalls.

For waterfall hikes in La Palma, it's essential to bring appropriate gear. This includes sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing (especially for routes with tunnels or potential spray), sufficient water and snacks, sun protection, and a headlamp for tunnels. Some trails, like the Marcos y Cordero, may require you to get wet, so consider bringing a change of clothes or quick-drying attire. Always carry a map or GPS device.
While the trails themselves are often in natural, undeveloped areas, you can typically find cafes or restaurants near visitor centers or at the start/end points of popular routes. For example, the Los Tilos visitor center usually has facilities. In Los Llanos de Aridane, as a bustling urban center, you'll find a wide array of dining options before or after your adventure.
Yes, bathing is permitted at the Los Tilos Waterfall, offering a refreshing experience after your hike. While the Small waterfall in Caldera de Taburiente National Park (near Cascada de Colores) is also described as refreshing for bathing, always exercise caution and check local regulations or signage regarding swimming in natural pools, as conditions can vary.
The Colorful Waterfall, or Cascada de Colores, is unique due to its striking, vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow. These colors are not from vegetation but are naturally created by the high iron content in the water interacting with the rock formations. It's a truly picturesque sight, making it a standout attraction within the Caldera de Taburiente National Park.
