Santa Bárbara is a hermitage known and recognized by all the inhabitants of the plain of Ter such as Cellera, Anglès or Sant Martí Sapresa. Together with PuuigdeFrou they form a ridge line that shows the first mountains of the Guilleries from this northern side of the mountain range with a beautiful Hermitage, currently preserved and full of life, which gives us beautiful views of the area.

Great views even though I was in a hurry today. There are many tables and benches to sit on, but I have not seen a fountain and in the attached farmhouse I would say that no one lives there.

The climb is demanding, but once at the top the views compensate for the effort.

The current hermitage of Santa Bárbara is structured in two parts.[1] On one side is what would be the two-story shelter covered with a gabled roof with slopes facing the façade. On the ground floor there are three openings, such as two small windows framed by stone posts and covered by a wrought iron lattice. But above all, the lintel portal with a semicircular arch with some medium-sized voussoirs stands out. On the first floor there are two openings of similar typology, that is, rectangular, with a monolithic lintel forming a flat arch, stone pillars and a worked parapet.[1] On the other hand, the hermitage itself is arranged, covered with a mixed roof, that is, half with gable slopes on the façade and the other half with a single slope on the façade. On the ground floor, the large voussoir portal with a semicircular arch stands out with some large and very well squared voussoirs.[1] As for the first floor, we find a rectangular opening with a monolithic lintel and stone pillars with a stained glass window that reproduces a tree. But in this sector the impressive belfry with a single lowered arch eye stands out especially. Its bell contains a long inscription. On one side it says: "Parish of Sant Martí Sapresa: Hermitage of Santa Bárbara 1952 Laus Deu." And to the other "Friends of Santa Bàrbara 2002: the friends of Santa Bàrbara to the Poble d'Anglès and to all those who venerate this indret".[1] The interior of the hermitage is a small chapel with a single nave, with two sections and a chancel and basically supported by two pointed arches with an arrow much more accentuated than the light. The section of the head, where we find the half-round apse, would correspond to the roof on one slope; The middle section would correspond to the bell tower and the foot section is where we find the gabled roof. In this sector we also find two important elements, such as a large quadrangular opening, with a monolithic lintel, stone pillars and a worked parapet, and a colored stained glass window that alludes to the crucifixion. The other would be a stone portal that communicates with the shelter.[1] In the section of the head there is a small altar table, as well as a small niche framed in stone that houses an image of Saint Barbara made in Osor following the resin procedure or technique.[1]

The peaks around Anglès are primarily part of the Guilleries Massif. This significant mountain system sits at the meeting point of the Catalan Transversal Range and the Pre-Coastal Range, offering diverse landscapes and impressive cliffs.
Among the most notable are Ermita de Santa Bárbara, which offers panoramic views of the Selva, Gironès, and Empordà regions, and the Costa Brava. Another significant point is Sant Miquel de les Formigues (also known as Sant Miquel de Solterra), the highest point of the Guilleries Massif, providing a wide, circular panorama from Pedraforca to Cap de Creus. Turó de vent is also popular for its views of Farners castle and the surrounding area.
Yes, Ermita de Santa Bárbara is considered family-friendly. It offers great views and has tables and benches, making it suitable for a family outing. The hermitage itself is a historical site that can add an interesting cultural element to your visit.
The Guilleries mountains offer a variety of hiking trails, from easy walks to more challenging routes. You can explore lush forests, discover waterfalls, and visit reservoirs. For example, the "Anglès – Ermita de Santa Bárbara loop" is a moderate hike that provides significant elevation gain and rewarding views. You can find more hiking options in the Hiking around Anglès guide.
The difficulty varies. Highlights like Ermita de Santa Bárbara are generally intermediate, while Turó de vent can be challenging, requiring fixed ropes in its most exposed section. Sant Grau Hermitage also involves a demanding but rewarding climb. There are also easier trails available for those seeking less strenuous options.
Many peaks feature historical and cultural sites. Ermita de Santa Bárbara is a 13th-century hermitage. Sant Miquel de les Formigues has the ruins of Solterra castle and the Saint Michael chapel. Sant Roc Hermitage and Sant Grau Hermitage are also significant religious buildings with rich history, often offering stunning views.
Beyond hiking, the area around Anglès offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous running trails and road cycling routes that explore the diverse landscapes of the Guilleries Massif and surrounding regions. The area's natural beauty, including reservoirs like Pantà de Susqueda and Pantà de Sau, also makes it ideal for connecting with nature.
Visitors frequently praise the spectacular panoramic views, especially from spots like Ermita de Santa Bárbara and Sant Miquel de les Formigues. The challenging yet rewarding climbs to places like Sant Grau Hermitage are also highly valued. The combination of natural beauty, historical sites, and the tranquility of the Guilleries Massif makes for a memorable experience.
While Anglès itself has some public transport connections, direct public transport to the higher, more remote parts of the Guilleries mountains is limited. It is generally recommended to use a car to access trailheads for the mountain peaks, especially for flexibility in exploring the wider massif.
The Guilleries mountains can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn are often considered ideal. During these seasons, the weather is typically milder, and the natural scenery is particularly vibrant, with blooming flora in spring and rich colors in autumn. Summers can be hot, while winters offer a different, often quieter, experience.
Some trails, like the ascent to Turó de vent, involve exposed sections that may require the use of fixed ropes. Always check the difficulty and specific conditions of a trail before embarking. It's advisable to wear appropriate footwear, carry enough water, and be prepared for varying weather conditions, especially at higher elevations.
