Pauli
December 21, 2025, Lanjarón River Waterfall

Experiences from November 2025: Access to the river from both sides is blocked and clearly marked with prohibition signs! At the marked location, there is a narrow bridge without railings. There is no sign of the waterfall or the attractive wooden bridge with railings shown in the photos by "expert" Oliver! The circular routes indicated under this trail are therefore completely unusable if you adhere to the prohibitions and barriers! We had to turn back and, unfortunately, retrace our steps. Very frustrating!

An impressive structure. When the water starts flowing over the top, it must have rained a lot in those mountains!

The Tajo de Cortés Waterfall is an impressive waterfall located in the Alpujarra Granadina, near the towns of Pitres and Pórtugos in Andalusia. Two routes that will take you to this beautiful waterfall: Sendero PR-A 29 from Pórtugos or the somewhat shorter Circular Route from Pitres.

The Lanjarón River rises in the high mountain of Sierra Nevada, under the peak of Veleta, and runs through the Lanjarón valley until it passes through the town of the same name and empties into the Rules dam.

We are on a dam in the middle of the Sierra Nevada, more specifically in the Alpujarra of Granada, precisely on a route for both hiking and MTB, which begins in the town of Soportujar, a town in Granada, Alpujarra, known for its sculptures and picturesque legends about witches and spells. The route begins in the town and ends at the Puente Palo free camping area, but we pass through a dam called dam 24, built in 1943, through which the Chico river passes, which is born on the slopes of Veleta. In said dam we can appreciate some ponds. refreshing in summer and a great waterfall that forms with the first thaws.

Pretty dike, known by mountaineers and hikers as "Dike 24". We find it on the climb from Soportújar to the Puente Palo recreational area, bathed by the Chico River that rises on the slopes of Veleta Peak. Construction of this dam began in 1940 and was completed in 1943. In order to see it in its full splendor, it is advisable to go during the Sierra Nevada snowmelt season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of waterfalls can I expect to find around Capileira?

The Capileira region, nestled within the Sierra Nevada National Park and the Poqueira Gorge, features a variety of natural cascades and impressive river features. You'll also find man-made structures that integrate with the water flow, such as historic dikes. These water formations are often encountered as part of scenic hiking trails, contributing to the area's natural beauty.

Are there any waterfalls that are particularly significant for their natural beauty or geological features?

Yes, Lavaderos de la Reina is a notable natural monument. This glacial circus offers a unique high mountain landscape with chorreras (waterfalls), lagoons, and meadows, making it a spectacular place to visit, especially during thaw season. Another impressive natural feature is the Tajo de Cortés Waterfall, a 15-meter cascade on the Bermejo River, which dramatically bridges a 900-meter drop in just 3.5 kilometers.

What is the best time of year to visit the waterfalls near Capileira?

The best time to visit many of the waterfalls, particularly those in higher elevations like Lavaderos de la Reina, is during the spring thaw. This is when the snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada mountains feeds the rivers, making the cascades most powerful and visually striking. For man-made structures like Dike 24 of the Río Chico, the snowmelt season also ensures they are seen in their full splendor.

Are there any waterfalls with historical significance in the Capileira area?

Yes, the Poqueira River Waterfall is a great example of the force of the Poqueira River, whose waters have been historically used for irrigation and power generation in the region. Additionally, Dike 24 of the Río Chico is a man-made monument built between 1940 and 1943, serving as a landmark for hikers and demonstrating historical water management.

What hiking opportunities are available to reach waterfalls around Capileira?

Many waterfalls in the Capileira area are integrated into extensive hiking trails. For example, the Tajo de Cortés Waterfall can be reached via the Sendero PR-A 29 from Pórtugos or a shorter Circular Route from Pitres. The Sulayr long-distance walking route, connecting Capileira and Trevélez, also features a specific waterfall. You can find various hiking routes, including those to the Lavaderos de la Reina, in the Hiking around Capileira guide.

Are there any mountain hikes that include waterfalls near Capileira?

Absolutely. The Sierra Nevada National Park offers challenging mountain hikes where you might encounter waterfalls. For instance, the Lavaderos de la Reina is part of a magnificent high-mountain route. You can explore various mountaineering routes, including those ascending Mulhacén Peak, which may pass by water features, in the Mountain Hikes around Capileira guide.

Can I find any waterfalls near the village of Pampaneira?

While not directly in Capileira, the Poqueira River, which flows through the gorge where Capileira is situated, features a waterfall near the neighboring village of Pampaneira. This indicates that the river system in the gorge creates these water features, and similar, albeit potentially smaller or unnamed, falls could be found closer to Capileira along the river's course.

What should I wear for a waterfall hike in the Capileira region?

Given that many waterfalls are found along hiking trails, especially in the Sierra Nevada, it's advisable to wear appropriate hiking gear. This includes sturdy hiking boots, as trails can be uneven or wet, especially near water crossings. Layers of clothing are recommended due to changing mountain weather, and waterproof outerwear can be beneficial, particularly during the snowmelt season when water flow is high.

Are there any waterfalls that are particularly popular with the komoot community?

What other outdoor activities can I combine with visiting waterfalls near Capileira?

The Capileira area offers a wealth of outdoor activities. Besides hiking and mountaineering, you can explore road cycling routes that offer stunning views of the Alpujarras Valleys. For example, there are difficult road cycling loops from Capileira and Trevélez. You can find detailed routes in the Road Cycling Routes around Capileira guide.

Is the Lanjarón River Waterfall accessible, and what should I know before visiting?

The Lanjarón River Waterfall is a natural monument where water is a protagonist. However, recent visitor experiences (from November 2025) indicate that access to the river from both sides might be blocked with prohibition signs. There may also be a narrow bridge without railings, and the waterfall itself might not be easily visible. It's advisable to check current local conditions before planning a visit, as circular routes indicated under this trail might be unusable due to these access restrictions.
