The bridges in the Rezzo Valley are commonly called "Napoleonic" because local tradition and some historical sources link their construction or reconstruction to the period of Napoleon's occupation of Liguria and the opening of important new communication routes under French rule between 1805 and 1814. Not, therefore, because, as many say, they were used by Napoleon...

the first part of the path is VERY muddy because a small stream flows through it. So despite the easy difficulty, hiking boots are recommended! It hadn't rained for a long time before, so I assume it's always like this. Happy to confirm or refute :)) But it's still totally worth it!!

on sunny days after a period of heavy rains the non-stagnant water makes the pond particularly suggestive with its shades of green. You can see it in the photo, not retouched.

Access is more difficult and adventurous than the two lakes further back

This great natural bathing area was my goal for the day! At the village of Diano Roncagli I searched intensively for the marked spot, but it was in the middle of the (even on foot!) inaccessible wilderness on the mountainside above the steep road up to the village. Shortly before the village I discovered a hiking trail that led up the mountain slope to the right of the road at an acute angle. After about 200 m, I finally reached a creek that tumbled down through a small gorge in steps, either by pushing my bike or on foot. At this point there were also the small pools of water in two of the photos, in which I could refresh myself. I then walked a little further along the path into the small, increasingly steep gorge, which was very impressive due to the great vegetation around the stream with tiered pools. There was no further path on the stream itself - everything was too steep and overgrown. The path itself then led out of the gorge steeply up the mountainside. The large pool in the photos in front of the rock face with a waterfall and men bathing was nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, the path marking on Komoot is inaccurate, the creek is not marked. In any case, it is worth the effort to visit this great place. I've corrected the positioning of this HL so that it now marks exactly where the pools of water are. I would be interested to know if anyone can find the "Bagno ristoratore sotto cascatella"!

You'll find excellent natural pools at several locations. The Lecchiore Ponds offer refreshing freshwater lakes, with the most beautiful pools found further up the stream. Another great spot is the Natural Pools Under the Waterfall near Diano Roncagli, which provides natural bathing areas within a small gorge. The Rocchetta Nervina area also features numerous natural pools fed by the Rio Barbaira, such as the Rocchetta Nervina Waterfall and Pond, known for being deep enough to jump into.
Yes, you can visit the Napoleon Bridge and Waterfall. This historical bridge has an adjacent waterfall and is part of a local tradition linking its construction or reconstruction to Napoleon's occupation of Liguria between 1805 and 1814.
Rocchetta Nervina is renowned for its series of waterfalls along the Rio Barbaira stream, some reaching approximately 12 meters. These cascades feed into pristine natural pools, creating idyllic spots for bathing. The area is characterized by unique rock formations, a lush, almost rainforest-like environment, and offers opportunities for nature walks, hiking, and canyoning. The village itself is a charming medieval settlement.
The Lecchiore Ponds, located in the Val Prino near Dolcedo, are fed by a mountain stream, ensuring cool water even in summer. They feature small waterfalls and picturesque natural pools carved into the rock, perfect for a refreshing swim. The walk to the ponds from Lecchiore's piazza takes about 20 to 30 minutes along a scenic path through the woods.
The natural pools and waterfalls are particularly refreshing during the warmer summer months, as the mountain streams keep the water cool. Spring and autumn also offer pleasant conditions for hiking and exploring, with lush vegetation and comfortable temperatures. After periods of heavy rain, the waterfalls are often at their most impressive.
Many of the waterfall areas, such as the Lecchiore Ponds, are suitable for families, offering refreshing swimming spots and scenic walks. However, some paths, like those leading to the First Lake of Rocchetta Nervina, can be muddy or more adventurous, so it's advisable to check specific trail conditions and difficulty levels. Always ensure children are supervised, especially near water.
Generally, dogs are welcome on trails and in natural areas around the waterfalls. However, it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially in more crowded spots or near wildlife. Be mindful of other visitors and ensure you clean up after your pet.
Beyond visiting the waterfalls, the region offers various outdoor activities. You can explore numerous hiking trails, such as those detailed in the Hiking around Chiusavecchia guide, which includes routes like the 'Sentiero Balcone Mediterraneo T7'. Cycling is also popular, with options ranging from touring to road cycling, as found in the Cycling around Chiusavecchia guide.
Comfortable athletic shoes or hiking boots are highly recommended, as some paths can be challenging, steep, or muddy. For example, the path to the First Lake of Rocchetta Nervina is often muddy. Bringing swimwear and a towel is a good idea if you plan to take a dip in the natural pools.
The waterfalls are generally accessible by car to nearby villages, followed by walks or hikes. Rocchetta Nervina is about an hour and 52 minutes' drive from Chiusavecchia. The Lecchiore Ponds require a 20-30 minute walk from the village piazza. While most areas involve walking on natural terrain, wheelchair accessibility is limited due to uneven paths and trails.
Yes, the charming villages near the waterfalls offer amenities. Rocchetta Nervina is a medieval settlement with stone houses, likely offering local establishments. Lecchiore is near Dolcedo, where you can find cafes, pubs, and accommodation options. These villages provide a peaceful escape and places to refresh after your explorations.
Visitors particularly appreciate the opportunity for refreshing swims in the crystal-clear natural pools, especially during warmer months. The lush, green environments, unique rock formations, and the sense of immersion in nature are frequently highlighted. The blend of natural beauty with charming medieval villages and historical sites also adds to the appeal, making for a diverse and rewarding experience.
