Unfortunately, the bridge is no longer there. As a result, the crossing is not possible without wet feet. The water is quite deep there.

The accommodation is close to the boat dock; a crossroads for a day trip into the valley (easy). You can take the boat there and back, or, like many others, start your tour over the Besseggen Ridge (see there).

We were there on 9/20/24 and the bridge had already been dismantled. Since the huts are only inhabited until the end of August/mid-September, the crossing is dismantled over the winter. The river has a strong current at this time and is relatively deep! It is possible, but risky ;) We didn't have time to go around the outside as the sun was already setting. The landscape behind the village on the other side is also very swampy! But we won't forget the bridgeless crossing so quickly ;)

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most popular canyons and gorges to visit in Oppland?

Oppland, now part of Innlandet county, offers several impressive canyons. Among the most popular are Waterfall Canyon, where the Vesle Ula river flows through a multi-armed granite canyon, and Ridderspranget Gorge, an 8-meter deep gorge known for its geological features and historical folklore. Visitors also enjoy Torabru Natural Rock Bridge, a unique natural monument serving as a bridge over a raging river.

What unique geological features can I expect to see in Oppland's canyons?

Oppland's canyons showcase diverse geological formations. At Ridderspranget Gorge, you can observe glacier mills where the Sjoa River has carved into the bedrock. The region also features dry canyons like Jutulhogget, one of Northern Europe's largest, formed dramatically by glacial meltwater. Many canyons, such as Waterfall Canyon, display impressive river-carved granite formations.

Are there any canyons in Oppland with historical or legendary significance?

Yes, Ridderspranget Gorge is steeped in Norwegian folklore. It's named after a 14th-century legend where a knight, Sigvat Leirholar, is said to have escaped pursuers by leaping across the gorge with a maiden in his arms. Jutulhogget Canyon also has famous legends surrounding its creation, often involving a battle between two giants.

Can I go canyoning in Oppland, and where are the best spots for it?

Yes, the northern part of Gudbrandsdalen, particularly around the Sjoa River in Nedre Heidal, offers excellent canyoning opportunities. The Gipa River is specifically known for 'juving' (canyoning), providing an exhilarating mix of scrambling, climbing, swimming, jumping, and sliding. Guided excursions are available for various experience levels. For more information on canyoning in Norway, you can visit Visit Norway's canyoning page.

What kind of outdoor activities can I do near the canyons in Oppland?

Beyond exploring the canyons themselves, Oppland offers a wide range of outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including challenging routes in Jotunheimen National Park like the Besseggen Ridge. There are also many road cycling routes, such as scenic loops along Lake Mjøsa, and running trails for those looking for a challenge.

Are there any family-friendly canyons or activities suitable for children in Oppland?

While some canyons involve challenging terrain, many offer accessible viewpoints and short trails suitable for families. For instance, Ridderspranget Gorge has a short trail from a parking area, making it convenient for a family stop. When considering canyoning, look for operators in Gudbrandsdalen that offer guided excursions suitable for various experience levels, including beginners or families with older children.

What is the best time of year to visit the canyons in Oppland?

The best time to visit Oppland's canyons is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During this period, the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities like hiking and canyoning, and the rivers are often at their most powerful due to snowmelt, creating impressive spectacles at waterfalls and gorges. Some areas, especially at higher altitudes, may have snow well into early summer.

What should I wear or bring for canyoning in Oppland?

For canyoning, you will typically need a wetsuit, helmet, and other safety gear provided by guided tour operators. It's advisable to wear comfortable swimwear under your wetsuit and bring sturdy shoes that can get wet and offer good grip. Always check with your chosen operator for specific recommendations on what to bring, as conditions can vary.

Is Jutulhogget Canyon located in Oppland, and what makes it special?

Jutulhogget Canyon is located on the border of Alvdal and Rendalen municipalities within Innlandet county, which includes the historical area of Oppland. It is special because it is one of Northern Europe's largest dry canyons, stretching 2.4 kilometers long with walls up to 240 meters high. Unlike most canyons, it was formed by a massive glacial lake outburst at the end of the last Ice Age, not by a river. It's recognized as a significant geological wonder globally. You can learn more about its geological significance on IUGS Geoheritage or Wikipedia.

Are there any viewpoints or easy access points to see the canyons?

Many canyons in Oppland offer accessible viewpoints. For example, Ridderspranget Gorge is easily accessible via a short trail from a parking area. Dørjuvet canyon also provides a great view from its edge. For Jutulhogget Canyon, visitors can walk along the upper edge for panoramic views or descend a path into the canyon itself.

What do visitors enjoy most about the canyons in Oppland?

Visitors frequently highlight the raw power of nature experienced in these canyons, such as the thundering masses of water at Waterfall Canyon and Ridderspranget Gorge. The unique geological formations, the thrill of canyoning, and the stunning views from various viewpoints are also highly appreciated. The blend of natural beauty with local folklore and legends adds another layer of enjoyment for many.
