Worth climb to the cairn for the downhill section on the main access road. Then drop into single track round the back lanes of Carharrack. Sweet! :)

On Saturday mornings, Penrose becomes the venue of West Cornwall's Parkrun with around 200 runners each week completing the 5km course. The running route follows the old Victorian carriageway through woodland and parkland with views of Loe Pool and beyond. At that time it is very busy.

This is a nice combination. From Loe Baar you have a view of the sea on one side and a view of a freshwater lake on the other. This allows you to walk completely around the lake.

Loe Bar was originally the mouth of the River Cober which led to a harbor at Helston. However, by the 13th century the bar had cut Helston off from the sea and formed the lake. Loe Bar consists largely of chert deposits, although it is not certain where this comes from as the nearest source is more than 200 kilometers away. There is also a reasonable amount of sand. The Loe Pool and Penrose Estate offer miles of paths and bridleways ideal for walking, cycling, and horse riding through woodlands and parkland. A popular 10km circular trail goes around Loe Pool. While swimming, fishing, or boating are not permitted on Loe Pool to preserve its natural character, you can enjoy the tranquility and explore the historic Loe Bar. The Stables Cafe provides refreshments.
Yes, several lakes are great for families. Helston Boating Lake in Coronation Park offers swan and rowing boat hire, a children's play area, and a Lakeside Cafe. Stithians Lake features a pirate-themed play area and an activity centre with watersports. The Penrose Estate also has traffic-free paths suitable for family walks and cycling.
Stithians Lake is the primary hub for watersports, offering windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. You can hire equipment or take instructor-led sessions at its Activity Centre. Fishing for rainbow and brown trout is also popular here.
Absolutely. The Penrose Estate has extensive paths, including a 10km circular trail around Loe Pool. Stithians Lake offers a 5-mile circular walking route. For more hiking options, explore the hiking guide for Sithney, which includes routes like 'The Loe & Penrose Estate loop from Helston'.
Many areas around the lakes are dog-friendly, particularly the extensive network of paths at the Penrose Estate and around Stithians Lake. Always keep dogs under control and check for any specific local signage regarding restrictions, especially in nature reserve areas or near livestock.
Loe Pool was originally the estuary of the River Cober, but Loe Bar, a significant shingle bank, separated it from Mount's Bay, forming Cornwall's largest natural freshwater lake. The bar is historically known for shipwrecks, including the HMS Anson in 1807, which led to the invention of the 'Breeches buoy'.
Yes, you'll find several options. The Stables Cafe is located within the Penrose Estate. Helston Boating Lake has the Lakeside Cafe in Coronation Park. At Stithians Lake, the Farm to Fork Cafe offers local produce. These provide convenient spots for refreshments during your visit.
The lakes are rich in wildlife. Loe Pool and Loe Bar are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to rare flora and fauna. Stithians Lake features a nature reserve and bird hides, making it excellent for bird watching. You can expect to see various bird species and other local wildlife in these natural habitats.
Helston Boating Lake in Coronation Park is particularly accessible, offering level access with smooth paths suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. The Penrose Estate also has traffic-free cycling and walking tracks that are generally well-maintained, though some areas might be more rugged.
The Penrose Estate offers traffic-free cycling tracks, providing scenic rides through woodlands and parkland with views of Loe Pool. For more extensive cycling adventures, check out the cycling guide for Sithney, which lists various routes in the area.
The lakes can be enjoyed year-round. Spring and summer offer pleasant weather for outdoor activities and longer daylight hours. Autumn brings beautiful foliage, especially around the Penrose Estate. Winter walks can be tranquil, though some facilities might have reduced hours. Always check local weather conditions before your visit.
Swimming is generally not permitted in Loe Pool to protect its natural environment and due to strong currents at Loe Bar. While Helston Boating Lake is for boating, not swimming, Stithians Lake does not explicitly prohibit swimming, but it's primarily known for watersports like windsurfing and kayaking, and caution should always be exercised in open water.
