Great panoramic views all around, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the head of Nidderdale and Great Whernside to the northwest.

Great Whernside is a cracking peak to do. The walk up from the picturesque village of Kettlewell is scenic and not that long a journey, about four and a half kilometres each way. Don't expect a jagged peak of any kind, this is a nice rolling hill, topped with the obligatory good old-fashioned trig point. At 704 metres, it is easily a UK-designated Nuttall.

One of the best mountains in the Dales and so much quieter than the big 3 (Y3P).

Lippersley Pike is at 330m. What makes this summit stand out is the rather substantial cairn here. Beautiful views of Denton Moor, Blubberhouses Moor and Askwith Moor - and beyond.

From peaks like Great Whernside Summit, you can expect expansive panoramic views across the Dales, including the village of Kettlewell and, on clear days, even the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Little Whernside offers sweeping vistas down into Coverdale and views of Angram and Scar House reservoirs. Simon's Seat provides extensive views, particularly over Wharfedale.
While some ascents can be challenging, many routes to peaks like Simon's Seat can be adapted for families, especially those starting from areas like Bolton Abbey. The 'Valley of Desolation' route to Simon's Seat, for example, offers interesting features like a waterfall. Shorter, easier walks around the base of some peaks or to viewpoints like How Hill and St. Michael's Church also provide scenic experiences without strenuous climbs.
Yes, many areas within Nidderdale National Landscape, including large parts of the fells around peaks like Great Whernside and Little Whernside, are designated as 'open access land' under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. This generally means dogs are welcome, but it's crucial to keep them under close control, especially near livestock or during ground-nesting bird seasons.
The region offers a variety of hiking routes. For example, you can find moderate hikes like the 'Scar House Reservoir Dam – Nidderdale Way loop from Lofthouse' or 'Brimham Rocks & Glasshouses village loop from Pateley Bridge'. For more options, explore the dedicated Hiking in Nidderdale Aonb guide.

The best time to visit for walking is generally during the spring, summer, and early autumn months (April to October). During these periods, the weather is typically milder, and the days are longer, offering better conditions for exploring the fells and enjoying the panoramic views. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear and experience due to potentially harsh weather conditions.
Yes, Lippersley Pike summit cairn has historical significance, with a nearby boundary stone dated 1757, offering a glimpse into the area's past. Little Whernside, at 604 meters, offers tranquil beauty and impressive views, particularly of the remote Nidd Head valley and the calm waters of Angram and Scar House reservoirs. From some angles, it has a distinctive shape resembling a 'mini Pen-y-Ghent' or a 'sleeping lion', making it a unique and quieter alternative to more crowded peaks.
Visitors frequently praise the expansive panoramic views from summits like Great Whernside Summit, often noting its sense of solitude compared to other Dales peaks. The unique geological features, such as the gritstone outcrops on Simon's Seat, and the opportunity for rewarding walks through scenic moorland are also highly appreciated.
