I was here in 05.2025 to walk the circular trail „Entdeckerschleife Baumberger Aue“ from the NeanderlandSteig. The Altrhein Auen was one of the many highlights on this route.

The Witzhelden Forest Nature Trail was established in 1965. It is an approximately 5 km long circular route with numerous information panels about the individual plants. The nature trail can easily be combined with the Witzhelden Fruit Trail for a hike around Witzhelden.

You can find it in the Neandertal, coming from the direction of Haan. Here you can buy unusual honey candles and honey. I took two jars with me because I was allowed to try them beforehand. I can highly recommend the coffee honey!

In spring, the loud frog concert is free and the bird concert is free all year round! In May 2024, the stork couple successfully bred three young after more than a hundred years. Beavers are doing well and have also had offspring. The kingfisher can be seen from time to time

Frogs are not only fascinating animals, but also important members of their ecosystems. They feed mainly on insects and other small invertebrates, helping to regulate pests. At the same time, they themselves serve as a food source for many predators, and their life cycle as an egg, tadpole and adult frog contributes to nutrient cycling in wetlands. Unfortunately, many frogs are now threatened or on the verge of extinction, mainly due to habitat loss, pollution and diseases such as the dreaded chytrid fungus disease. Protecting and conserving frog habitats is therefore crucial to the survival of these fascinating animals and maintaining ecological balance.
