Drowned Land of Saeftinghe Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

If you really want to 'taste' the 'Verdronken Land Van Saeftinge' choose to follow the path at the seaside marked at the entrances by the plate with inscription 'Eigen weg - Betreden op eigen risico' : 'Own way - access at your responsibility'. When I followed all the parts, the cattle was behind the fence towards the river (the entrance wasn't secured for the cattle neither). The only risk is that you might loose control of your bike following the trails of the tractor wheels.
When you follow the track do it at slow speed so you can have a look at the birds, plants etc. With a mountain bike: peace of cake. Almost in the middle of the track, you'll find the visitor's place. Worth rending visit to know more about this 'sunken land of Saeftinge'.

Puyenbroeck Provincial Park

Highlight • Rest Area

Puyenbroeck is a provincial domain of 510 hectares in the Belgian province of East Flanders, mainly in Wachtebeke but also in Zaffelare and Eksaarde. The area was purchased by the province in 1965 and opened to the public in 1969. The park is low-lying and contains several large ponds. The part of the park south of the Zuidlede is more wooded. Puyenbrug Castle is also located in the park. The name "Puy" refers to an artificial height, while the word "broeck" refers to the swampy nature of the lakes.

There is a large playground, sunbathing areas, a flower park of 23 hectares, a play forest of 10 hectares and a traffic park where children can ride go-carts. There is also an animal park that pays attention to the 'Living Heritage', ancient livestock breeds. You can take a tour through the park with a tourist train. Bicycles and carts can also be rented and rowing boats and pedalos can be rented at the ponds.

MOLA, the provincial mill center in the former Puyenbrug Castle, is also located on the grounds of the provincial domain.

The domain has approximately 150 hectares of forest, with an almost completely contiguous forest area south of the Zuidlede. A permanent breeding wall for birds has also been constructed, which is used by, among others, the sand martin and the bee-eater. An ice cellar was set up as a hibernation place for bats. Some shallow spawning grounds for the fish were created in the ponds.

In 2017 and 2018, Music For Life, Studio Brussel's charity campaign, took place on this domain.

Otheensche Creek

Very nice and quiet cycle path, completely separated from the traffic along the water. Halfway along the path there is a nice tavern along the water.

Bentillekreek

Highlight • Lake

Typical for Sint-Jan-in-Eremo are the five creeks (approx. 65 ha). The creeks are old peat pits, which were created by the exploitation of the bog or peat areas. These pits were increasingly eroded during numerous floods and storm surges. The Bentillekreek is one of the five creeks in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo. It has a very irregular shape and is bordered by the Leopold Canal.

On the southern edge of Zuid-Beveland, near Baarland, a new nature reserve was created in 2007. This was done to compensate for the nature that is being lost due to the deepening of the Western Scheldt. The deepening increases the current and the nature outside the dike on the Western Scheldt is crumbling. The two most important goals in the creation of this area were to provide a high-water refuge for wading birds and a breeding area for coastal breeding birds. The area is used extensively by coastal breeding birds. Birds such as ringed plovers, ringed plovers and avocets are extensively searching for worms, crustaceans and cockles. In the spring of 2009, the nests were counted and it turned out that more than 110 pairs of avocets were breeding. The young are currently leaving the nest. Wherever you look, you can see this beautiful creature wading through the area. The ranger also counted a small colony of breeding black-headed gulls, a few Kentish plovers, a few little ringed plovers and three pairs of ringed plovers. You can take a look at this nursery. The area is right next to the Scheldeoord campsite in the south of Baarland. You can look out over the area from the Zeedijk. This area falls under Natura 2000
