Tips from the Community

Gabriele
May 5, 2026, View of Svartifoss from Above

You leave the car in the paid parking lot (like all those you will find in Iceland) and climb up the path that includes three waterfalls. The last one, Svartifoss, has the peculiarity of being "formed" by square lava columns suspended in the void. From here you could continue the walk on the other side, but in our case we opted for the return route. You then go back to the visitor center and, after a possible stop at the bar, you head towards the Skaftafelljökull glacier.

You can get almost right up to the glacier.

It's much quieter here by the lake than near the parking lots. It's also a lovely spot for a break with a beautiful view.

🚶‍♂️ Dead Man Walking in Þingvellir Imagine: In the past, you didn't come here to hike, but because the Alþingi had decided that your final adventure awaited you – beheading, drowning, or hanging. A natural idyll with a twist. While today tourists stroll along the wooden walkways with selfie sticks, back then, condemned prisoners walked their final journey to Drekkingarhylur. "Wellness in a glacial stream" just sounded a little less relaxing back then. Who needs Game of Thrones when reality here in the 17th century was much more brutal?

On July 25, 1969, the DC-3 took off from Keflavík Airport bound for the runway at Sauðanes Farm, near Þórshöfn in northeast Iceland. While braking, the aircraft skidded to the right, colliding with a pile of lumber and suffering damage to the landing gear and wing. The four crew members were uninjured. Due to the high cost of repairs, it was decided to leave it in a field near the runway. For decades, the wreck served as a shelter for horses and sheep. In 2023, it was moved to the wreck of Sólheimasandur.
