There are beautiful hiking trails here that also commemorate the former border.

An interesting relic from bygone times

On the state border near Trappstadt, the Altenburg Castle there and a landwehr fort on the Thuringian side with the Wartberg near Gompertshausen bear witness to the centuries-long border between the two towns. Unfortunately, only remnants of the landwehr remain here, as the former zone border was recklessly established. The plaque does not provide information about the Spanshügel itself, but rather about the former landwehr fort that runs along the Spanshügel. The pictures are clearly legible.

The Gleichberge, which mainly consist of the Großer Gleichberg and Kleiner Gleichberg, are a small, island-like mountain range rising up to 679 m above sea level in the southwestern, Franconian part of Thuringia in Germany. They are located just east of the small residential town of Römhild in the Hildburghausen district. The Gleichberge are the most impressive witnesses to the Tertiary volcanic activity of the Heldburg Gangschar, which once extended from here to the south of the Main. (Source: Wikipedia)

The Hildburghausen–Lindenau-Friedrichshall railway, also known as the Hildburghausen-Heldburg Railway, was a nearly 30-kilometer-long narrow-gauge railway (meter gauge) connecting Hildburghausen with the Heldburg region to the south. The railway was a "Meining State Railway" (Meiningsche Staatsbahn), as the construction costs of 750,000 marks were largely financed by the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen. The railway was built according to a contract dated January 12, 1877, by the Localbahn-Bau- und Betriebs-Gesellschaft Wilhelm Hostmann & Co. of Hanover, which also initially operated the line until the Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Vering & Waechter finally took over.
