Only very rarely do we find old military road wayside pillars in Germany as the last remaining stone witnesses, which were first mentioned in documents in 1578. The Waldeck region can be proud of having saved such a wayside pillar (see illustration) as a cultural monument from past centuries up to our time. It stands - as a 4.56 m high four-sided obelisk on a profiled base block made of sandstone - on the heights of the Trappenberg near Twiste. The deeply carved inscriptions are also still easy to read; only the hand cut out of sheet iron that was once attached to the top of the old wayside sign, which is under monument protection, is missing. May this last silent witness be a herald of times gone by for future generations. (From the book 1100 Years of Twiste)

The monument that Prince Friedrich had erected at the height of the Trappenberg proves that once the road over the Trappenberg was completed, it was believed that a gigantic work had been carried out. This four-sided obelisk, which is still in good condition today, is still popularly called Permitte (pyramid). Only very occasionally in Germany do we find old military road pillars as the last stone witnesses, which were first mentioned in a document in 1578. The Waldecker Land can be proud of having saved another such pillar as a cultural monument of past centuries from now to our time. The older hamlet of Twiste is north of the river and grew around the church and castle. In 1537 the sources already differentiate between old and new Twiste. The latter, also known as farms, hips or Niggen-Twiste, was built around this time near the aristocratic farm in addition to seven newly built farms subject to compulsory service by the then Landdrosten and Waldeck Bergrat. The domain courtyard is demolished after 1970 and the town hall and a multi-purpose hall are built in this area.
