After the devastating earthquake of 1953, the building was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt directly opposite its original location. The tower's bells remained undamaged at the time. It is an important religious and cultural landmark of the island. Every year on August 11th, a solemn procession starts here in memory of the victims of the 1953 earthquake.
