Tips from the Community

JakobusPilger
April 13, 2026, St Michael's Church, Aughton

This house of God is dedicated not to one of the many people revered as saints, but to the Archangel MICHAEL. The name (coming from the Hebrew language) means “Who is like God?”. He is often depicted – in paintings or as a statue – with a flaming sword, occasionally also with a spear. Michael is – together with Raphael and Gabriel, sometimes Uriel is also counted – one of the three or four archangels who (according to human conception) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.

Not too much to see to be honest but worth a look if you are doing the Sefton Village Heritage trail.

Nice historic village but probably better for a walk than a bike ride.

"St Michael's Church in Aughton, West Lancashire is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The oldest fabric in the church is a blocked Norman doorway, and an adjacent section of the wall. The nave and steeple date from the 14th century, and a chancel was present in the 15th century. In about 1545–48 the north aisle was rebuilt, replacing an earlier, narrower aisle. The church was restored in 1876 by W. and J. Hey, during which the chancel and the west windows of the nave and aisle were rebuilt. There was a further restoration in 1913–14 when the north vestry was enlarged."
