Tips from the Community

JakobusPilger
April 13, 2026, St Michael's Church, Aughton

This house of God is dedicated not to one of the many people revered as saints, but to the Archangel MICHAEL. The name (coming from the Hebrew language) means “Who is like God?”. He is often depicted – in paintings or as a statue – with a flaming sword, occasionally also with a spear. Michael is – together with Raphael and Gabriel, sometimes Uriel is also counted – one of the three or four archangels who (according to human conception) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.

"St Michael's Church in Aughton, West Lancashire is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The oldest fabric in the church is a blocked Norman doorway, and an adjacent section of the wall. The nave and steeple date from the 14th century, and a chancel was present in the 15th century. In about 1545–48 the north aisle was rebuilt, replacing an earlier, narrower aisle. The church was restored in 1876 by W. and J. Hey, during which the chancel and the west windows of the nave and aisle were rebuilt. There was a further restoration in 1913–14 when the north vestry was enlarged." Liverpool Leeds canal can get muddy in section so only advise riding with gatorskins. It's a fantastic ride and the wildlife and canal boats make it worth you while.

Horse racing was popular in Liverpool from at least Tudor times, In the 18th century Nicholas Blundell organised races on the sands at Crosby. In 1829, William Lynn, the owner of the Waterloo Hotel in Ranelagh Street, Liverpool, approached the Second Earl of Sefton, William Philip Molyneux, whose nickname was 'Lord Dashalong', about leasing land to organise flat racing. Lord Sefton liked racing, so he agreed. He laid the foundation stone on 7 February 1829, and placed a container of sovereigns inside the footings. Lynn built a grandstand in time for the first meeting at Aintree racecourse on 7 July 1829. The opening race was the Croxteth Stakes over 1 mile 2 furlongs, and was won by Mufti. In 1835 Lynn organised hurdle racing, which was a great success, especially when a well-known, rider, Captain Martin Becher, agreed to take part and rode a horse named Vivian to two victories. The story goes that Becher told Lynn about the Great St. Albans Steeplechase.
