Tips from the Community

Jamie S.
July 5, 2024, Azalea Collection Trail

The National Native Azalea Collection is a little further away from the main gardens across a bridge from Bent Creek Road. It's a nice addition to any hike in this area that is away from some of the crowds you might encounter closer to the main gardens. There is a short, walking-only loop through the National Native Azalea Collection that also includes a teaching circle, and an informational sign about Bent Creek. At the west end of the Azalea Collection Trail there is an additional loop - the Fern Loop - which is a great way to add a little more milage to the main loop through natural mountain wetland and part of a Rhododendron thicket. When hiking through these thick plants, you get small taste of what “Laurel hell” meant to a early mountaineers bushwhacking through this part of the country.
