There is documented evidence of winegrowing in Meersburg since 1324. The historic buildings from the early 18th century and the vineyards were owned by the Prince-Bishops of Constance until 1802/1803. During secularization, the winery fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden and became the first wine-growing domain in Germany as the Grand Ducal Baden Domain Winery. After the First World War, in 1919, it was renamed Meersburg State Winery. As the legal successor to the state of Baden, the state winery now belongs to the state of Baden-Württemberg. The Meersburg State Winery combines all of this, with wine lovers and gourmets getting their money's worth. Over 800 years of tradition are embedded in the walls and vineyards of the winery. The imposing wine cellar with a view of the lake was built in the former moat. The large wooden barrels in which the wine can mature are still stored there today.

In the course of the secularization of 1802/03 by Napoleon, the prince-bishop's winery fell to the young Grand Duchy of Baden and became the first wine-growing domain in Germany as the "Großherzoglich-Badische Domainkellerei". It was only after the Second World War that it was renamed the state winery. Today, the company belongs to the state of Baden-Württemberg and, as a state company, reports to the Ministry of Finance

Steckborn, located on the Swiss side of the Untersee, is one of the beautiful places on the Swiss side that invite with a historic old town. The first written mention of Steckborn can be found in the middle of the 9th century in connection with the island of Reichenau. The first traces of settlement go back to the Neolithic Age. Pile-dwelling settlements were built here as well, as is known from the Überlinger See.

Something for wine lovers 🙂 - If you have enough space in your backpack, you can also take a few bottles with you. The Meersburg State Winery has vineyards in Meersburg Gailingen and Hohentwiel. It regularly invites you to wine tastings, guided tours and other events. The documented beginning of viticulture in Meersburg is also the beginning of the winery of the Prince Bishops of Konstanz, which centuries later was to become a state winery. In the annual book of the Bishop's Church of Constance in 1210 a vineyard of Manegoldus von Rohrdorf am Ufer in Meersburg is mentioned, which - for lack of heirs - fell together with the castle to the Bishop of Constance Konrad II von Tegerfelden. The wine cellar, which was built under Prince Bishop von Stauffenberg in the former moat, dates from the early 18th century, as does the entire ensemble of buildings.
