The neo-Gothic pilgrimage chapel St. Marien zu den Neunlinden stands on a hill west of Elzach in the Black Forest and is considered a distinctive landmark of the town. Origin: The original chapel was donated and built in 1459 by a baker from Elzach named Albertus Schleicher, who was born in Rome – at that time, however, directly on the banks of the Elz river. The Catastrophe (1778): On July 20, 1778, a devastating flood of the Elz completely destroyed the chapel. The Miracle: The historical devotional image of the Mother of God was carried away by the floods. Legend has it that it swam over 50 kilometers to Riegel am Kaiserstuhl, where it was recovered unharmed and brought back to Elzach. The New Building (1913): To protect the sanctuary from future floods, the current chapel was consecrated in 1913 high up on the slope, and the devotional image was solemnly transferred there. Due to its hillside location, the neo-Gothic building features a distinctive crypt ("Mount of Olives").

In the face of the small sacred monument rising above the "Golden Head", which bears the very special dedication as a CROSS OF PEACE into the unrest of the world, I would like to invite you to a short spiritual rest. Here are some thoughts from Pierbattista Cardinal Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, who connects the Easter message of the resurrection with the hope for peace: + "God's last word is the empty tomb. It is the Lord who goes before the disciples to Galilee and also goes before us, leading us to a peace that is not an illusion, but the fruit of the cross. 'If you, [Jerusalem], had only known on this day the things that make for peace!' (Luke 19:42). The peace that Jesus offers is not a fragile agreement between enemies, but a peace born of the cross – a peace that comes from a God who gives himself completely and needs no violence or weapons. This is the paradox we must embrace today."
