Saint CYRIACUS, to whom this church in Hümmel is dedicated, was a deacon and martyr from the early Christian era. According to Catholic tradition, he is counted among the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The feast day of Saint Cyriacus in the calendar of saints is on August 8th. On a prayer card – originating from another church under his patronage – there is the following intercession to the saint: "Saint Cyriacus, open our eyes to the physical and spiritual needs of our fellow human beings. Give us the willingness to listen to the little ones with their big worries and to help them in their distress. Help that our hearts do not become rigid with egoism and hopelessness."

The chapel of St. Margareta and the village were first mentioned in 1307 as a Luxembourg fief. In 1576 the church was a branch of Tondorf. The valuable furnishings of the old church are thanks to the Counts of Blankenheim. It has been an independent parish church since 1804. The old church was a hall church with three axes and a mighty west tower and a small choir closed on three sides. This old church was demolished in 1923 and replaced by the new building that stands today. Only the Romanesque tower, originally built as a defensive tower, remained. The list of the so-called “14 emergency helpers” is not uniform everywhere, as regional peculiarities are sometimes taken into account. As a rule, the following patron saints are named (the text is from a notice board from Memmingen, which was created in the Baroque period, the original spelling - which is partly foreign to us - has been retained): St. Blasius - intercedes for sore throats St. Georgius - should be called upon in times of war St. Erasmus - for intestinal and abdominal pain St. Vitus - a great friend of children's hearts St. Pantaleon - patron of doctors, powerful with God St. Christopher - he protects powerfully against hail and bad weather St. Dionysus - is called upon in times of major pain St. Cyriacus - can help those possessed by the devil St. Achatius - he helps Christian soldiers quickly St. Eustachius - averts sorrow in marriage St. Ägidius - helps to recognize secret sins St. Margaretha - where the devil's cunning finds an entrance St. Katharina - when wisdom lacking in studies St. Barbara - received the sackcloth in death

In 1583, Johann Zimmermann von Frohnhofen was the tenant of the mill in the "Drießbach", which belonged to the Dukes of Arenberg. In 1794, the tenant Johannes Helten paid nine malters of grain, a pig worth at least 150 pounds and a chicken as annual rent. The Duke of Arenberg's mill was still in operation until the end of the 19th century. The historic mill is located in the romantic Dreisbach valley and is a point of departure for many wonderful hiking routes.
