March 1, 2026, Hermann-Löns-Weg

Hermann-Löns-Weg (named after the "Heathland Poet") begins as a residential street at Hansjakobweg. The crossing over the Albtalbahn railway line is the only access for cars to the area west of the railway. The moderate car traffic thins out as one gets further away from the buildings. It then becomes an asphalted farm track, which eventually leads car-free to Rüppurr and Karlsruhe.

A beautiful path between Thomashof and Palmbach, and especially away from the main roads.

Historic fountain, beautifully encased in stone, with the year 1892 inscribed on the trough. Unfortunately, it does not provide drinking water, as indicated on the water feature.

Small, sometimes urgent tip: there is a ladies' toilet (on the 1st floor) and a gents' toilet (on the 2nd floor). By the way, the medieval market currently taking place in December is a real highlight.

The acoustics in the church are very good. At Christmastime, there is always a wonderful oratorio with choir, orchestra, and soloists.

Karlsburg Castle is a historically significant site: when Margrave Karl II moved his residence from Pforzheim to Durlach in 1565, he and his successors expanded the former hunting lodge. Art and culture were promoted, and a court theater was established. After surviving the Thirty Years' War without significant damage, the splendor of the Durlach residence came to an abrupt end on August 16, 1689. During the War of the Palatine Succession, the castle and the town were set ablaze by French troops. The previously spacious buildings and magnificent grounds were almost completely destroyed by the flames. By 1715, the western wing of the castle, including the chapel and stables, had been rebuilt. However, the relocation of the court to the newly founded Karlsruhe three years later put an end to further expansion plans. Subsequently, Karlsburg served as a residence for widows and, in the 19th century, as a barracks.

The Bäderbrünnele served as a water supply for the residents of the surrounding streets and was fed by a spring on Badener Straße, which was in operation until 1911.

Durlach's only remaining city gate tower is still considered one of the landmarks of the former residence of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach. Likely built in the 14th century, the tower once secured the southern entrance to the city and, like the three other former gates, was integrated into the city wall. In front of the gate was the outer bailey, the outer bailey wall, and the city moat with a drawbridge. A section of this wall and moat system has been preserved at the Basel Gate. The building with red shutters in front of the tower is the guardhouse, renovated in 1751, where the gatekeeper originally collected customs and tolls for goods imported into the city. The two sandstone pillars, crowned with spheres, mark the site of the former outer gate. On August 16, 1689, Durlach was almost completely burned down by French troops as a consequence of the War of the Palatine Succession. The Basel Gate also lost its roof in the fire. At the behest of the Margrave, it was rebuilt as a prison tower with the still-existing, solid vaults, the massive oak cell doors, and the external stair tower. The reconstruction, including the new roof truss in the form of a Welsche Haube (a type of onion dome), was finally completed in 1761.
