The Nahe is a 125-kilometer-long, left tributary of the Rhine, flowing through the German states of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate. It originates in a forest area near Selbach, a district of Nohfelden in Saarland, and finally flows into the Rhine at the so-called "Rheinknie" (Rhine bend) near Bingen am Rhein. The Nahe's catchment area covers an area of approximately 4,067 square kilometers. On its way northeast, it passes well-known towns such as the gemstone town of Idar-Oberstein, Kirn, Bad Sobernheim, and the traditional spa town of Bad Kreuznach. By far the most important and longest tributary of the Nahe is the Glan. The Nahe valley is particularly characterized by viticulture, both scenically and economically. A geographical peculiarity along the river's course is also the Rotenfels, which, with a height of around 200 meters, is considered the highest cliff face in Germany outside the Alps. As the valley lies in the rain shadow of the Hunsrück and Soonwald, the region belongs to the areas with the least rainfall and warmest climate in the country, which even favors the occurrence of Mediterranean animal and plant species.
