It was worth taking the ladder to heaven, at the top I found it very nice to walk on the plateau.

The statues of the Three Kings (Kaspar, Melchior, Balthasar), which line the rear entrance to the so-called Pope Hill on Marienfeld near Kerpen, are mainly represented here because the XX. World Youth Day - the closing service of which was celebrated here - was under the motto: "We have come to worship HIM". This excerpt of the text comes from the Gospel according to Matthew (chapter 2) and is spoken - with the preceding words "We saw his star rising and ..." - by the wise men from the east, who spoke the newborn King of the Jews, Jesus Christ, want to visit. The Bible text does not refer to them as kings and also does not name or number the men, the latter was concluded from the three gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh). Her relics have been in Cologne since 1165 and are still venerated there today.

Not long ago we were in the Azores. Such ladders to heaven were often found on the steep crater cones. They are good for fitness👹🤡

During the XX. World Youth Day 2005, signposted pilgrimage routes led to Marienfeld via footpaths and hiking trails, which could be covered in around four hours. The Marienfeld has been used since September 2004 for the Vigil on August 20 and the closing mass of the World Youth Day on August 21, 2005, both of which together with Pope Benedict XVI. celebrated, prepared for up to a million participants.

The castle was first mentioned in 1249 when it was destroyed. An Adolf von Ringsheim appears in 1278. His descendants had to sell the headquarters to Johann Hurth von Schoeneck, the Hereditary Marshal of Jülich, in 1455 due to excessive indebtedness. With the death of the last Hurth von Schöneck, the archbishop withdrew the fiefdom of Ringsheim Castle and only gave it back to Johann Freiherr von Beck in 1635, whose son sold the property to the Electorate of Cologne Chamberlain Philipp von der Vorst in 1656.

A staircase made of wooden beams to the hill, to the summit of the Glessener Höhe. It is a bit old, some of the planks show signs of wear from the many visitors to the Glessener Höhe. There is another way to get to the top via the hiking trail, but it is not as spectacular as the Himmelsleiter.

Only the ascent from the bottom to the top of the hill (100m long) is paved; all the access roads to the Pope's Hill are gravel/pebbles/potholes. I would never ride there with my road bike. It's doable with a trekking bike, but it's not exactly enjoyable.

The highest point in Naturpark Rheinland is the Glessener Höhe, reaching 205.8 meters above sea level. Interestingly, this prominent elevation is a recultivated spoil tip from former brown coal mining, now covered in mixed forest.
From elevated points like the Glessener Höhe, you can enjoy expansive panoramic views over the Cologne Bay, including the Cologne skyline and even the Düsseldorf television tower. The picturesque landscapes of the Siebengebirge and Bergisches Land are also visible, especially in winter. The Rodderberg summit also offers a great panoramic view of the Siebengebirge.
Yes, Naturpark Rheinland features several unique natural landmarks. The Glessener Höhe itself is a remarkable example of landscape reclamation, being a recultivated spoil tip. The Ville ridge, which traverses the park, is notable for its diverse landscape and the Ville-Seenplatte, a district with about 40 lakes formed from former mining areas. Additionally, the Rodderberg summit is an extinct volcano with a clearly visible crater outline.
The Pope's Hill (Papsthügel) on the Marienfeld is a significant historical site, having hosted World Youth Day in 2005 with Pope Benedict XVI. It features statues of the Three Kings. Another historical site is Ringsheim Castle, a former moated castle with structures dating back to the 13th century, though it is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
Yes, several spots are suitable for families. The Pope's Hill (Papsthügel) on the Marienfeld is categorized as family-friendly. The Rodderberg summit, an extinct volcano with interesting flora, is also family-friendly. The Glessener Höhe area includes an adventure trail, the Pulheimer Bach, which is enjoyable for children.
The 'Stairway to Heaven' (Himmelsleiter) is a wooden plank staircase with 224 steps that leads directly to the summit of Glessener Höhe. It provides a distinct path to its fantastic views and the summit cross.
Naturpark Rheinland offers extensive opportunities for outdoor recreation. You can find numerous hiking and cycling trails across the Ville ridge. For specific activities, consider exploring the Road Cycling Routes in Naturpark Rheinland, Gravel biking in Naturpark Rheinland, or Running Trails in Naturpark Rheinland. While enjoyable year-round, the panoramic views from the Glessener Höhe are particularly impressive in winter, when the air is often clearer. Sunrise or sunset also offers a spectacular experience from the summit.
The Ville is a roughly 50-kilometer-long ridge that traverses the central part of Naturpark Rheinland. It reaches elevations up to 170 meters, with the Glessener Höhe being its highest point. Formed by geological movements and significantly shaped by former brown coal mining, it now offers a diverse landscape of forests, lakes (the Ville-Seenplatte), and agricultural areas, providing extensive recreational opportunities.
Visitors particularly enjoy the unique blend of natural beauty and reclaimed landscapes. The panoramic views from spots like Glessener Höhe, the distinct experience of climbing the 'Stairway to Heaven,' and the historical significance of places like Pope's Hill are highly appreciated. The transformation of former mining areas into diverse recreational spaces, including the numerous lakes, also makes the region a unique destination.
