Of course, legends and sagas also entwine around this cave, such as those of Hercules and the giant Kakus, or of the mighty robber Kakus, who spread much terror. However, the most beautiful is the legend of two farmers and the devil: There were two farmers who preferred to play cards in the >Kakushöhle< than to go to church during Holy Week. A stranger joined them and asked to play along. The farmers agreed, and the stranger lost a lot of gold to them. The stranger demanded revenge and suggested to both of them that the first one to end the card game should be the devil's guest forever. Blinded by the gold, the farmers agreed. Then they soon recognized the devil in the stranger and secretly vowed that if they were saved, they would never touch a card again and would honor Holy Week in the future. Neither of them dared to end the game, and so they played for days and nights until one of their worried wives found them and called the pastor because she recognized the misfortune. The pastor hurried to the cave and ordered the devil to release the two farmers. At the sight of the crucifix, the devil let go of the farmers, angrily tore the rock and fled through the resulting hole in the cave wall out of the Kakushöhle. According to the legend, this is how the narrow exit in the upper part of the large cave came into being.

The memorial in Bergheim, in front of the present chapel, was erected around 1938. The structure stands in front of a quarry stone wall on a flat base; five stone blocks form the actual memorial. The upper end consists of two flat sandstone slabs, topped by a steel helmet. On the lower two stone blocks is a dedication, and on the third and fourth blocks is a sword with laurel leaf garlands. On all four sides of the fifth block are an Iron Cross and a hanging laurel leaf garland. On the right and left sides are the names of the fallen soldiers of the First World War, and at the top are the words "They died a heroic death." After the Second World War, two stone name plaques were attached to the quarry stone wall behind the memorial. The plaques bear the inscription "1939 1945 Our Fallen" at the top. At the bottom left of the plaques is a bomb hitting the ground and a bomb exploding. ..." The Brotherhood Cross of the Five Wounds Brotherhood, which stands northeast of Weyer, was built in 1727 from red sandstone. It symbolically shows the 5 wounds of Christ and bears the inscription "Praeside E:W:B: 1727" on the front. What the three letters mean is not clear. At the time the cross was built, Johannes Bollmes was pastor in Weyer, Michael Kuell was abbot in Steinfeld and Clemens August I was archbishop of Cologne, so the three letters cannot be the initials of the three clergymen. Here on the old church path from Eiserfey to Weyer, the so-called Brotherhood Cross of the former Five Wounds Brotherhood was erected in 1727. The cross made of red sandstone symbolically shows the five wounds of Christ in the upper part. The five beautiful wood-carved cartouches that frame the right side altar of the nearby parish church of St. Cyriakus and also symbolize the five wounds of Christ date from the same period. The Five Wounds Brotherhood was the oldest brotherhood and the most well-known far beyond the borders of Weyer. The main purpose of this association was to care for and pray for the deceased. The brotherhood book, newly created by Pastor Heid in 1601, is one of the most valuable items in the Weyer parish archive and is well looked after today. The names of the members are divided into 4 groups: 1. the clergy, 2. the neighboring pastors, 3. the nobles and 4. the laypeople. Since the book, which was created in 1601, also contains translations from the Old Testament, the founding of the brotherhood can be dated to the late Middle Ages. The people listed there lived before 1500. Damian Beissel von Gymnich, for example, married Eva, the heir of Arnoldis von Schmidtheim, in 1511 and was already a member of the Weyer Brotherhood. Other brotherhoods were the Jesus, Mary and Joseph Brotherhood, probably founded around 1650. The Brotherhood of St. Archangel Michael, founded in 1860, the Rosary Brotherhood, founded in 1910, and the St. Barbara Brotherhood, founded in 1928.

When we passed by there, we unfortunately realized that we had missed station 11 (calcareous sinter block at the collecting basin)... 😨

Distant view far to the north over the southeastern tip of the Lower Rhine Bay, the Zülpicher Börde. To the southeast you can see as far as the Volcanic Eifel. The basalt dome of the Michelsberg and the Hohe Acht are clearly visible. https://eifelverein-mechernich.de/index.php/wandern/service/351-eifelspur-soweit-das-auge-reicht In earlier times, analogous to the name, it was probably a place of execution.
