The Muurhuizen (Wall Houses) were built on the foundations of Amersfoort's first city wall. When a new city wall was constructed around 1380 to accommodate the city's growth, the old wall was demolished. The freed-up stones were used to build houses along the old wall, starting around 1500 β hence the name Muurhuizen (Wall Houses).

The name is already mentioned in old deeds around the year 1600. It is clear that the building already had a brewer-owner. Logical, because at that time brewing was practiced on a very small scale - usually by the owner himself - exclusively to provide for his own needs.
