The Protestant church of Zweeloo dates from the 13th century and stands on a rise on the edge of the village. It is a late Romanesque hall church with a steeple, which was thoroughly restored in 1929/1930. The 14th-century Maria bell in the steeple indicates a possible dedication of the church to Mary.[3][4] The interior features a pulpit from 1709 and a baptismal font of Bentheim sandstone that is as old as the church itself. The swimming spot is located in the Sleenerzand forest, between Noord-Sleen and Schoonoord and close to Emmen. The spot originally originated from sand extraction during the construction of the N381 and is a wonderfully clean swimming spot with a separate play pond for the little ones, with a spacious sandy beach. The spot is approximately 4 hectares in size and is shallow (with a slowly sloping bottom), making it very suitable for small children. The beach (which surrounds the entire spot) is cleaned daily. In short: ideal for a day out with your family!

The 1975 train hijacking at Wijster was an action by seven South Moluccan youths to raise awareness for the independence of the South Moluccas. The hijackers hijacked a train between Assen and Zwolle, held passengers hostage, shot the driver and two passengers, and surrendered almost two weeks later, following negotiations and pressure. The event, which began on December 2, 1975, resulted in the deaths of three people and had a major impact on the Moluccan community in the Netherlands, directly (and partly) leading to a second, bloodier hijacking at De Punt in 1977.
