Because climbing the tower costs 1 euro. There is an animal exhibition and a great panoramic view of the forest and the landscape. The individual trees on the hills are particularly beautiful (in autumn) surrounded by yellow trees. It's worth it.

The current castle was built in the mid-19th century in the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque style as an imitation of a medieval defensive tower. It consists of a 26 m high tower in the style of a keep, flanked by two single-story side wings in the style of a palace. There are no curtain walls or other defensive structures; in this respect, it is more of a residential tower than a castle in the classic sense. The castle today houses a restaurant for excursion guests and occasional events. An exhibition on the local flora and fauna has been set up in the tower room. The crenellated viewing platform on the tower is accessible and offers – especially after the hurricane Kyrill in 2007 felled many of the surrounding trees – a wide view over the town of Melle and the surrounding area. Around the castle lay the more than 200 ha large wildlife park Diedrichsburg with numerous, free-roaming wild boars, mouflons, and sika deer. The wildlife park was dissolved in 2021. The area is a popular excursion destination in the region and part of the TERRA.vita nature park. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diedrichsburg

The castle complex has been partly preserved, partly rebuilt, or replaced by other buildings. Teaching events are held here, there's a small open-air theater, a playground, a café open on weekends, and a terrace with a magnificent view.

The Wittekindsburg, which is popularly known today, is indeed a castle-like restaurant, but the true fortification, which bears the name Wittekindsburg, dates back to the Iron Age and was built over 2000 years ago. In 1893, it was decided to establish a tourist spot and hiking destination among the foundation remains of the true castle, which had long been reclaimed by nature. Shortly thereafter, a residential building was erected along with an inn and a stable. Just 5 years later, the residential building was torn down and the current building was erected in its place. This entire building complex with its half-timbering and distinctive tower, which can already be recognized very well from the surrounding valleys, is now a listed monument.

The Wittekindsburg service station offers hikers a good stop to take a breather. In addition, from the Wittekindsburg you have a wonderful view of the flowing valley with the Costedter ponds.

From the parking lot it's about 700 m high, although steep, but it's worth it ... you can also sit in the café above ...
