Wilhelm August Adolph Georg Keferstein stammte aus einer alten Papiermacher-Familie.

Er widmete sich nun vorzugsweise seiner Lieblingswissenschaft, der Entomologie, zu der er eine umfangreiche Sammlung und eine bedeutende Bibliothek besaß.
Schon 1837 war sein umfangreiches Buch „Die dem Menschen und den Tieren schädlichen Insekten“ erschienen.
Am 2. Juni 1824 war er ordentliches Mitglied der Akademie gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften zu Erfurt und am 9. Juli 1825 Mitglied im Senat der Akademie geworden.
29 Vorträge hat er in den Jahren zwischen 1826 und 1881 vor der Akademie gehalten.
Die meisten befassten sich in biologischer Sicht mit Insekten wie der am 20. Mai 1840 gehaltene Vortrag über die Wanderheuschrecke.
Doch auch in literarischer Beziehung wandte er sich seinem Lieblingsgegenstand zu, wie z.B. ein Vortrag über die mythologische Bedeutung der Biene beweist.
Dass Kefersteins Interessen weitgespannt waren, das wird durch Vorträge über die „Tragweite des Schalles" (1837), über soziale Fragen der Gegenwart (1847), den „Fortschritt der Cholera" (1849), über den „Monotheismus der Juden" (1865), über die „Bildung des Staates der alten Sachsen" (1881) unter Beweis gestellt.
Einige seiner Vorträge sind im Druck erschienen.
In der Breite seiner Interessen glich er seinem älteren Bruder Christian (1784-1866), einem bekannten Mineralogen und Geognosten, der sich auch mit völkerkundlichen und sprachwissenschaftlichen Fragen beschäftigte.
Keferstein vermählte sich am 9. Juli 1826 in der Augustinerkirche mit der 1804 geborenen Elisabeth von Janowsky, einziger Tochter des Hauptmanns Anton von Janowsky, Platzkommandanten von Erfurt.
Die Ehe blieb kinderlos.
Keferstein, der mehr als 60 Jahre in Erfurt gelebt hat, wohnte zunächst in der Kleinen Arche, ab den 1840er Jahren in dem Hause „Zum Grünen Sittich und gekrönten Hecht“ (heute Johannesstraße 178, Ecke Krämpferstraße), das er bald auch zu Eigentum erwarb.
