Nestled on a small hill in the Birkigt district (Unterwellenborn, SLF-RU), the charming Evangelical Lutheran village church stands amidst rural tranquility. It is located on Heideweg and is a harmonious stopover on rural tours.

The church building was first mentioned in 1125. The Romanesque hall church with a choir tower and a recessed rectangular choir was built in the late 12th century. Today's nave was renovated in 1509 using parts of the Romanesque structure and the tower over the choir was rebuilt. In 1742 the nave was widened to the north, so that the retracted choir tower was shifted from the central axis to the south. In addition, the windows and the helmet of the tower were changed. The church bells from 1485 and 1728 have been preserved. Inside, the ceiling was raised with a flat wooden barrel vault and two-storey galleries were installed. In 1936, during renovation work, the paintings in the choir were uncovered. On the north wall are two consoles to the side of the entrance with gaff heads. Next to the altar is the passage to the choir. In the choir, the vault has bulging vault ribs and lime secco painting from the 1st half of the 14th century, which shows Christ as judge of the world and Mary and John as intercessors. The side belt arches are ornamentally decorated. The winged altar from 1522 has carved figures from the Saalfeld School. In the shrine, the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan is shown, in the wings on the left Saint Anna and Saint Apollonia, on the right Saint Sebastian and Saint Augustine. When closed, the panels show the Ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The predella has a relief depicting Jesus' Last Supper. On the north gallery is the stone pulpit from the 16th century with depictions of the evangelists. The alabaster baptismal font shows Noah's ark, the circumcision of the Lord and the baptism of Christ. Above the altar is the gallery for the organ. This has 16 registers, distributed over 2 manuals and pedal. It was built in 1744 by Johann Heinrich Scherff and restored in 1994 by Rösel & Hercher Orgelbau. (Wikipedia)
