Copper mining at Tiskasjöberg (Stora Kopparberget) likely began in the 9th century and has been documented since the 13th century. The mine's heyday was in the 17th century, when the Falun mine accounted for two-thirds of the world's copper production. But it wasn't just copper that was extracted; at that time, the mine was also Sweden's largest gold and second-largest silver producer. Because mining was conducted rather haphazardly, cave-ins occurred repeatedly. In 1687, a large part of the mine collapsed.
