Fan y Bîg Summit and Diving Board

Highlight • Summit

The Diving Board on Fan y Big is one of the most photographed locations in the Brecon Beacons. The views over towards Cribyn and Pen Y Fan are super good, as are the views down towards the Gap. It is great to come up here on a winter weekday, when it is a bit quieter too. It is also a very popular spot for your sunrise and sunset shots. It is easier than it looks to get here, and it doesn't matter which way you come up; the effort is absolutely well worth it.

Tor y Foel Summit

Highlight • Summit

Rising in isolation above the serene Talybont Reservoir, Tor y Foel's 1,808-foot (551 m) summit is a grand objective. Often ascended from Llangynidr to the east or Talybont to the north, its unique position makes it a fine vantage point for taking in the emerald bulk of the Central Beacons massif. It can be linked with the smaller Craig Danywenallt to the north, the location of an Iron Age hillfort.

Bwlch y Ddwyallt

Highlight • Viewpoint

Bwlch y Ddwyallt is a nondescript peak marked by a small cairn. Don't confuse it with another larger cairn nearby. However the views from this escarpment looking across towards Fan Y Big, Cribyn, Pen Y Fan and Corn Du are superb. On a good day I have seen inversion clouds tumbling over this escarpment like a waterfall. It is a bit of a slog to get here but well worth your while.

Path to Craig y Fan Ddu

Highlight (Segment) • Waterfall

This is actually a nice segment that goes from Blaen y Glyn car park to the top of Fan Nedd. More than likely, this is the quickest route you can take to get some height in the Brecon Beacons. The route is quite steep, but you have some nice waterfalls to see to take your mind off things, and when you get to Fan Nedd, you are literally on a plateau where the walking gets much easier. This is the start of the walk to the Wellington Bomber War Memorial, too.

Bryn Summit Cairn

Highlight • Viewpoint

If the structure of the Central Beacons massif was said to be a great hand, with its five north east reaching ridges its digits, then Bryn is definitely the tip of its thumb. Rising to 1,840 feet (561 m), it is a conspicuous green dome above the villages of Llanfrynach, Pencelli and Talybont. On a clear day, the vista from the summit cairn towards the famous trio of Fan y Big, Cribyn and Pen y Fan is particularly fine, as are the views down onto the wide Usk Valley.

The Bryn is the stepping stone hill for the central range when you are coming up from Llanfrynach. It has grand views of the long footpath towards Waun Rydd and onwards towards Cribyn and Pen y Fan. The views down onto the Usk Valley are superb.

The walk to the top of Fan y Bîg. takes in some of the most incredible ridge lines in the Brecon Beacons. It’s a steep start, but then you have around 6km of easy ridge line walking, with simply sensational views all the way. Reaching the top is the icing on the cake, and if you luck out with good conditions, with breathtaking views it’s really a very hard spot to leave. As well as the views, you'll also have the chance to step out onto the diving board, one of the most photogenic spots in the area.

Bwlch y Ddwyallt is the name commonly applied to the high point of the plateau of Gwaun Cerrig Llwydion in the eastern part of the Brecon Beacons in south Wales. It is a top of the mountainside of Waun Rydd. Walkers should take note that this route is a bit seasonal, as the river is tricky to cross when water levels are high in the spring/autumn.

I have been coming up here now for about forty years. There are a variety of routes to here, but each one brings you to this one spot. These lumps of stone and the views are drop-dead gorgeous. Top it off with a visit to the pub afterwards, and it's a good day out. It's also a good run—before you get to the pub, of course!
