September 7, 2025, Josef Bresser Observatory

The public observatory in Borken-Hoxfeld was named after Josef Bresser, the founder and owner of Bresser Optik, as the company was heavily involved in the idea and planning, and financed and realized it together with the city of Borken. The observatory was completed in December 2002 and inaugurated in May 2003. It serves public astronomy education and houses the largest mass-produced telescope to date: a 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The Borken Star Friends Association is currently responsible for its operation.

If you want to do the subsequent descent you have to go up first, which is a good opportunity to get your legs warm.

This church in Erle has a patron saint's name that is truly on everyone's lips, but only a few will know the person behind it: Saint Sylvester's commemoration day is December 31st. He lived at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth century and was Bishop of Rome when Emperor Constantine recognized Christianity as a religion with the Edict of Milan - known as the "Edict of Toleration" - and thus ended (at least temporarily) the period of bloody persecution of Christians.

VISIT TO THE JOSEF BRESSER OBSERVATORY IN BORKEN The Q2 astronomy project course at the Geschwister-Scholl Gymnasium, led by Björn Cohausz (1st from left in the picture), visited the Josef Bresser Observatory in Borken on November 23rd, 2023. This is operated by the Borken Star Friends Association. Although the weather was anything but suitable for observing the sky, the visit was nevertheless a complete success thanks to the courageous lecture by the association's first chairman Richard Kastner (2nd from left in the picture). Many details about star observation as well as the technology of the telescope there and the function of the observatory could be clearly explained and learned. Questions from the students were very welcome and were answered profitably. Afterwards, the students were presented with some astronomical photographs taken by the star friends themselves, some of which were astonishingly detailed.
