Salt is extracted from compartments – pits – made of cement or stone, of varying sizes and shallow depths, to which salt water is taken from a well through irrigation channels. Currently, the water is raised by means of a motor and distributed according to a system that is jointly accepted and respected (not always) by all the owners. The sewers, threshing floors and wooden houses for storing salt complete the set of what is called the Salt Mines of Rio Maior. According to technicians, a large and deep rock salt mine, crossed by an underground current that feeds a well, makes the water extracted from it salty, seven times saltier than that of the sea. The salt is obtained from its exposure to the sun and wind and the consequent evaporation of the water, deposited at the bottom of the pits, which is then placed in pyramid-shaped piles to dry until it is collected. The process is rudimentary and similar to that used in the salt mines on the seashore. The only difference is the picturesque valley that surrounds them, the well, the unique style of the sailors (as the men who work in the salt mines are known), the wooden houses and the country air that can be breathed.

The historic village of Bombarral, which was the setting for the popular series Bem-Vindos a Beirais, has the oldest building in the municipality, the Medieval Tower, donated by King Dinis to an Aragonese nobleman who settled in Portugal and became the maternal great-grandfather of King Nuno Álvares Pereira. The Tower appears in a will of King Sancho II, dating from the 13th century, and has had several owners, including, in the 18th century, the Lafetat merchants who, two centuries earlier, had settled in our country, building a manor house in this village that gave rise to the current Quinta dos Loridos. Located close to the Tower is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Socorro, whose construction dates back to 1547. Its interior is covered in tile panels with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and there is a 16th century image of the Virgin of Milk. In the parish of Carvalhal, you can also visit the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, founded by Queen Leonor at the beginning of the 16th century and covered in tiles, with several high-quality images from the 16th and 18th centuries, and also rich in paintings. It has a main altarpiece, now in the sacristy, made up of panels with paintings by the artist António da Costa. The Church and Sanctuary of Senhor Jesus do Carvalhal has been a place of pilgrimages, ceremonies, fairs and pilgrimages from all over the region since time immemorial. It is here that Christian communities have come on pilgrimages since ancient times, the so-called Círios, a religious manifestation with popular characteristics whose purpose is to praise and give thanks in fulfillment of promises. These celebrations maintain ancient traditions, such as the Singing of Loas and the Bagpipes. Next to the sanctuary there is also a picnic area where you can have picnics in the shade of the many trees there.

Village and parish seat of Carvalhal

Mannerist and Baroque church, built in the mid-17th century. A highlight is a table above the front door, which informs that Dom João IV spent the night in this house in 1645. Also noteworthy is the notable tile heritage inside.

This rocky trail is great fun to ride down, just note that you may meet some thorns.
