We wanted to walk from the Schwarzkopf towards the Steinfeldspitze. However, the path is very demanding. That's why we're back and have made the Gamskogel. On the descent, we noticed the second path, towards the Steinfeldspitze. We walked this one too. Significantly better and not quite as demanding as the other one from Schwarzkopf. But there are some climbing passages. ☝️ A very nice view! We are then even further in the direction of Bärenstaffel. Also very beautiful and impressive with the 6 meter high summit cross!

The Weißpriach region is rich in scenic peaks. The Speiereck Summit (2,411 m) offers top all-round visibility, rewarding hikers with extensive panoramic views. Another highly scenic option is the Gasselhöhe, providing wonderful views over the Dachstein massif and the Schladminger Tauern. Additionally, peaks like Gupritscheck and Karnereck are known for their picturesque trails, often featuring clear Lungauer mountain lakes and access to traditional mountain huts.
Yes, the Steirische Kalkspitze (2,459 m) is notable for its unique geological composition, primarily carbonate rock (limestone and dolomite), which contrasts with the surrounding crystalline rocks of the Central Alps. It even features a 'limestone-window' in prehistoric rock formations. For history, the Zinkwand (2,442 m) offers a distinctive alpine route that delves into the mountain's rich mining past, allowing exploration of historic tunnels like Schmieden and Himmelskönigin.
For experienced hikers, the Steirische Kalkspitze (2,459 m) includes exposed sections requiring sure-footedness and a good head for heights, particularly towards the summit. The Zinkwand (2,442 m) also presents a magnificent and distinctive alpine route with deep views and exposed sections, including an unsecured ramp with a cable and a ladder. The 'Great Gurpitscheck' is associated with a difficult hiking route, offering a rewarding challenge. The Steinfeldspitze Summit also features challenging, partially exposed paths secured with steel cables in some places, and some climbing passages.
Yes, the Zechnerriegel (2,115 m) and Fanninghöhe are often explored together as part of a scenic circular route across alpine meadows, offering a more accessible mountain experience. The starting point for hikes to these summits can be accessed from the Fanningbergbahnen parking lot. Routes can involve a journey up the family ski descent or a continuation over the Fanninghöhe to reach the Zechnerriegel summit.
The region around Weißpriach is characterized by fresh air, picturesque landscapes, fragrant forests, and lush alpine pastures. Many routes to the mountain peaks feature crystal-clear mountain lakes, such as the Giglachseen and Oberhüttensee near the Steirische Kalkspitze. You'll also encounter stunning panoramic views, including the Hohe Tauern, Hochkönig, Dachstein, Hochgolling, and Nockberge mountains from peaks like the Steirische Kalkspitze.
Beyond hiking and mountaineering to the peaks, the area offers diverse outdoor activities. You can explore various mountain hikes, including difficult loops like 'Ursprungalm – Giglachsee Hut loop'. There are also options for gravel biking, with routes such as the 'Preber Round', and waterfall hikes, like the 'Ullnhütten Waterfall – Tonimörtlhütte loop'.
Yes, the Weißpriach region is known for its serviced mountain huts. Around the Steirische Kalkspitze, you'll find traditional chalets like Giglachsee Hütte, Oberhütte, and Ursprungalm offering refreshments. The Hochwurzen Hut is another popular spot, offering amazing views from its terrace. Many trails leading to peaks like Gupritscheck and Karnereck also provide access to farmed mountain huts.
The region offers hiking opportunities throughout much of the year. However, for alpine routes and higher peaks, late spring to early autumn (roughly June to September) generally provides the most favorable weather conditions, with less snow and more stable temperatures. This allows for full enjoyment of the clear mountain lakes and lush alpine pastures.
Visitors frequently praise the breathtaking panoramic views, especially from summits like Speiereck Summit and Guschen Summit, which offer extensive vistas of the Dachstein massif and Schladminger Tauern. The diverse range of trails, from scenic walks to challenging alpine routes, along with the presence of clear mountain lakes and traditional huts, also contribute to a highly enjoyable experience.
Yes, combining peaks is a popular option for longer, more rewarding hikes. For instance, you can combine an excursion to the Steirische Kalkspitze with a visit to the Lungauer Kalkspitze via the Akarscharte. The Zechnerriegel and Fanninghöhe are also often explored together as part of a scenic circular route.
For challenging peaks like the Steirische Kalkspitze and Zinkwand, sure-footedness and a good head for heights are essential due to exposed sections. On the Zinkwand, navigating an unsecured ramp with a cable and a ladder is part of the route, and wearing a helmet is recommended. Always be prepared for alpine conditions and check local weather forecasts before setting out.
