The fortress, which in its core dates back to the 12th century, is the landmark of Langenwang, is among the most important medieval defensive structures of that era and, due to its exceptional length, among the largest castles in Styria. It primarily served as a regional administrative center, managed by castle stewards. It consists of the upper castle and two outworks, separated by moats. Its massive decay began towards the end of the 18th century, after it had been severely damaged by stone robbing and an earthquake. During World War II, further parts of the ruin were destroyed by bombing. Today, a part of the western core, the shield wall of the upper castle, and the main gate within its surrounding walls have been preserved from the fortress complex. The walls have been largely secured and renovated over the past 40 years by members of the Hohenwang Castle Association.

To the east, the donation of territories in the Neunkirchen-Pitten-Gloggnitz area to the Benedictines enabled the founding of a Vornbach filial monastery in Gloggnitz. After the completion of the new Christ the King Church (1962) near the town center, the monastery church became the former parish church.

Trapped at this place due to a heavy thunder storm. But it was safe under the gate. Well preserved castle with nice resting areas. Some hiking to get in and out of there.
