The City Museum is a baroque building with a modern interior. The former correctional facility and orphanage, built from 1724 to 1738 directly in front of the city wall, has housed the Gera City Museum since 1914. The interior fully meets the requirements of a contemporary museum. Since a comprehensive renovation from 2002 to 2004 and the subsequent re-establishment, the museum has presented a completely new concept and design. The permanent exhibition and the themed exhibition "Romantic Gera" offer an exciting journey through Gera's history, from the first settlement to the 21st century, on approximately 1000 m² spread over four floors. In addition, two to three special exhibitions and a wide-ranging museum educational program are offered annually. https://www.gera.de/tourismus-freizeit-kultur/museen/stadtmuseum
