Beautiful view of the Traunstein and the Totes Gebirge.

Recommended in combination with the small Sonnstein, but not on its own, as the view is only possible from the very front at the edge and the view from the small Sonnstein is much nicer and there is more to see from there.

It doesn't necessarily have to be the Taunstein! This peak on Lake Traunsee is in no way inferior to its "big brother." A dream view!

Dachstein coming from the south is quite a challenge. At least 800 meters of often vertical rock face are very impressive. The shoulder climb is underestimated by many tourists. For me, the first 30 meters or so of the start is more of a "C". And you think the KS is short. Wrong. The climb overcomes the summit structure in several stages and is quite long. But it is really 🥰if the weather is right. To descend, I took the Randkluftsteig to the glacier. It is anything but trivial at the bottom because there is no rope for the last 20 meters. But there are steel pins and a few clamps. You can only be properly secured with a rope partner. OK, it might be a B but be careful‼️. The Randkluft itself can also be bad. So for this variant, crampons, a partner and a short rope are advantageous. It took me a total of 4 hours and I didn't think I was slow.

Traunstein (1,691 meters) is known as the 'guardian of the Salzkammergut' with its distinctive silhouette above Lake Traunsee. While its summit is just outside the district, Hoher Dachstein (2,995 meters) is a significant draw for experienced alpinists in the broader region. For more accessible options, Grünberg and Feuerkogel are popular, both reachable by cable car.
For breathtaking vistas, Großer Priel provides a sensational panorama over the Totes Gebirge towards the Dachstein. Traunstein offers spectacular views of Lake Traunsee and the surrounding landscape. The 5Fingers observation platform near Hoher Dachstein also provides panoramic views. Closer to Lake Traunsee, the Erlakogel Summit offers excellent views of Traunstein, Traunsee, Totes Gebirge, and Höllengebirge, while the Summit of Kleiner Sonnstein is one of the most popular viewing points on Lake Traunsee.
Yes, several peaks cater to families and those seeking easier access. Grünberg is a popular family-friendly mountain accessible by cable car, offering walking paths, an adventure playground, and other facilities. Feuerkogel is also easily accessible via cable car, leading to a mountain station with a viewing terrace and easy access to alpine scenery. The Feuerkogel Mountain Station is a great starting point for walks suitable for various skill levels.
For experienced mountaineers, Großer Priel offers demanding via ferratas like the Bert-Rinesch-Klettersteig (rated C/D). The ascent of Hoher Dachstein from the south presents a considerable challenge with 800 meters of vertical rock face, and the Randkluftsteig descent requires specialized equipment. Other challenging summits include Großer Sonnstein Summit, which involves a 600-meter ascent from Ebensee, and Erlakogel Summit.
The region offers diverse hiking opportunities. You can find numerous trails around peaks like Traunstein, with popular routes including the Naturfreundesteig, Mairalmsteig, and Zierlersteig. Hohe Scharte is attractive almost year-round with many mountain paths in summer. For challenging climbs, it's often recommended to start early in the high season to avoid crowds, as noted for Erlakogel Summit.
While many peaks are well-known, some offer a more secluded experience. Erlakogel provides excellent views and a nice area at the summit cross for resting, often feeling less crowded than the most popular spots. Vormauerstein, a highlight of the Schafberg area, offers wonderful views over Lake Wolfgang and Attersee. Gasselkogel is known as an observation platform with extensive views of forests and natural landscapes, often featuring a wooden hut nearby.
