This is a woodland and wetland reserve with 600m of mainly grass footpaths which create a circular route and can be very muddy during winter. There are lots of tree roots and uneven surfaces across the reserve. Footpaths tend to be narrow. There is one gate onto the reserve at the footpath entrance which is closed from April to July to protect breeding birds.

The Chalkland Way / Minster Way winds above and and to the south of this spectacular dale, affording great views of its characteristic gorse bushes. A must see and on a par with the equally spectacular Horse Dale, although not quite as deep and long.

One of a number of boundary stones along the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds Way in East Dale. This one reads "South end of Hunsley fence". They appear to mark the edge of the Drewton Estate which occupies land to the west.

Lots of signs around here demarcating private land, however, this is on the intersection of a bridleway (Hunsley High Circuit) running east-west and a public footpath running north from this weir up Drewton Wold.

Fantastic and good quality track along Weedley Dale, running up through East Dale and Hunsley Dale (west to east).

Yes, the region offers many circular routes. For a challenging day out in the Yorkshire Wolds, the Huggate, Horse Dale & Sylvan Dale loop from Millington is a great option that explores the area's characteristic dry valleys. If you're looking for something flatter, the Driffield Canal & Nafferton loop from Driffield provides a pleasant waterside walk.
Many trails in the area are suitable for dogs. The Humber Bridge Country Park is a particularly popular, dog-friendly nature reserve with woodland trails. For a walk with great views, consider the View of Weedley Dale – Forest Path in East Dale loop from Beverley Clump, but always be mindful of local signage, especially near farmland and wildlife reserves like Bempton Cliffs during nesting season.
For an easy walk that's great for families, the Saltmarshe Hall loop from Laxton is a relatively flat and manageable option. Another excellent choice is Danes Dyke Nature Reserve, which offers sheltered woodland paths leading down to a beach perfect for rock pooling and paddling.
Absolutely. While Flamborough Head is iconic, you can explore a different section of the coastline with the Flamborough Cliffs – North Landing Beach and Cliffs loop from Sewerby. This route offers dramatic cliff-top views and access to the scenic North Landing beach.
The region is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Hikers frequently praise the stunning contrast between the dramatic, wildlife-rich coastline and the peaceful, rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds. The well-maintained paths and quiet, dry valleys are also common highlights.

Yes, the most famous is the Yorkshire Wolds Way, a 79-mile National Trail. For a challenging single-day hike that covers a significant distance, you could tackle The River Hull & Tophill Low Nature Reserve loop from Beverley, which is over 26 km.
The region is rich in wildlife. The coastline, particularly at the highly-regarded Flamborough Outer Headlands Nature Reserve and RSPB Bempton Cliffs, is famous for its seabird colonies, including puffins and gannets (typically April-July). Inland, trails like the Houghton Moor, Market Weighton Canal & North Cave Wetlands loop pass through nature reserves known for their wetland birds.
Yes, many larger towns and villages that serve as gateways to popular walking areas, such as Beverley, Bempton, and Hessle, are accessible by train or bus. For example, you can start several walks directly from Beverley or take a train to Bempton for coastal routes. It's always best to check local bus and train schedules in advance as services to more remote trailheads can be limited.
The Yorkshire Wolds offer a serene hiking experience characterized by rolling chalk hills and a unique landscape of deep, grass-covered dry valleys.
