A very beautiful hike; we did it with a hiking guide. I would recommend it to anyone new to La Gomera. Be sure to bring sturdy shoes, a sun hat, and provisions. Hiking poles are also advisable. Along the way, you'll encounter ever-changing, beautiful scenery. Arriving at Table Mountain is truly breathtaking; anyone who dares can climb it. At the end of the tour, there's a highly recommended restaurant.

A tip? Unfortunately, it is overcrowded on weekends and holidays due to the nearby car park. If you only drive to the car park and then walk to the summit in 10 minutes and then don't take a circular hike up here into the forests of the north and the maquis of the south, you haven't gotten to know the island...

Geologically, the Fortaleza, like the Roques typical of the Canary Islands, is an ancient volcanic vent filled with magma. It was formed in the most recent volcanic phase of La Gomera around 4.36 million years ago, a so-called cryptodome, whose magma did not penetrate to the surface but solidified in the volcanic vent. Due to the rock's greater resistance to weathering, the table mountain withstood millions of years of erosion better than the rock layers in its surroundings, and voilá, a barranco on the right, a barranco on the left and our magnificent specimen in between! The Fortaleza also has something to offer archaeologically: it is one of the most important archaeological sites in La Gomera. On the summit there are structures made of dry stone masonry that date back to pre-Hispanic times. In addition to the remains of residential buildings and grazing pens, 25 sacrificial altars were found. Later, there were fights with the Spanish here, and there are various legends. Wikipedia tells of an event in the early 15th century: The conqueror Fernando de Castro had landed on La Gomera and killed or wounded the brother of King Amaluige. To escape the anger of the locals, he and his men were able to retreat to a very high cliff (probably the Fortaleza) far from the sea, which only had access on one side. After two days of siege, he was allowed to leave in exchange for clothes and weapons. Another legend goes like this: The last resistance fighters are said to have retreated to the Fortaleza. In the end, they made a tragic decision: to avoid both an agonizing death from starvation and submission to the Spanish, they threw themselves down the Fortaleza.

La Gomera features several distinctive peaks and rock formations. Among the most prominent are Alto de Garajonay, the island's highest point, and the iconic volcanic plug Roque de Agando. Another significant site is Fortaleza of Chipude, a distinctive table mountain with historical importance.
From many of La Gomera's summits, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. For instance, Alto de Garajonay offers 360-degree vistas of the entire island, and on clear days, you can see neighboring Canary Islands like Tenerife (with Mount Teide), La Palma, El Hierro, and even Gran Canaria. Other peaks like Fortaleza of Chipude also provide expansive island views.
Yes, several peaks hold significant historical and cultural importance. Alto de Garajonay was a sacred site for the ancient Guanches, used for worship and rites, with archaeological findings at its summit. Similarly, Fortaleza of Chipude was an important sacred place and lookout point for the Guanches.
La Gomera offers extensive hiking opportunities around its peaks. For easy walks, explore routes like 'Las Creces Trail' or 'Route 17: Pajarito - Alto de Garajonay Loop' which you can find in the Easy hikes in La Gomera guide. For more challenging options, consider the trails around Fortaleza of Chipude, which require surefootedness and sturdy footwear.
Yes, La Gomera has options for family-friendly mountain walks. While some peaks like Roque de Agando are accessible and offer viewpoints, many trails within Garajonay National Park are suitable for families. Look for routes categorized as 'easy' in guides like Easy hikes in La Gomera.
La Gomera enjoys a mild climate year-round, making its mountains accessible for hiking in most seasons. However, the laurel forests, especially around Alto de Garajonay, can be misty. Clearer days offer the best panoramic views, particularly in spring and autumn when temperatures are pleasant for outdoor activities.
Yes, La Gomera offers challenging cycling routes that traverse its mountainous terrain. You can find options like the 'Alto de Garajonay Summit Loop' or the 'Cliffside Café – Sea and Valley Viewpoint loop' in the Cycling in La Gomera guide. These routes often provide stunning views but are generally considered difficult due to the elevation changes.
Beyond the peaks themselves, you can observe unique geological formations and ecosystems. The area around Cumbre de Chigueré and Ermita del Coromoto features abstruse rock formations and multi-colored earth masses, remnants of the ancient seabed. The laurel forests surrounding Alto de Garajonay are a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering a prehistoric and mysterious atmosphere.
The time required to hike to Alto de Garajonay varies depending on your starting point and fitness level. Numerous well-marked trails lead to the peak, with popular starting points including Laguna Grande, Pajarito, and El Contadero. Many routes are considered intermediate or easy, making it accessible for a half-day hike.
Los Roques are a series of impressive volcanic rock formations, or 'plugs,' scattered across La Gomera. The most prominent is Roque de Agando, but others include Roque de Ojila and Roque de la Zarcita. These striking geological features are best viewed from viewpoints like Mirador de Las Roques, offering dramatic scenery.
While Alto de Garajonay and Roque de Agando are well-known, Mount El Cepo offers a unique experience. Visitors often describe its landscape as 'Martian,' especially when clouds roll in during the afternoon, creating a mystical atmosphere. In the morning, it provides breathtaking views of Tenerife.
When hiking in La Gomera's mountains, it's advisable to wear sturdy footwear, especially for trails that might be tricky or involve some scrambling, such as those leading to Fortaleza of Chipude. Layers are also recommended, as weather conditions can change, particularly in the higher altitudes and misty laurel forests.
