The Schlossfelsen is basically a group of granite colossi. Since this is the only place with the name "Schlossfelsen", the following Steinwald legend fits it very well: The Germanic chief god Wodan lives in the rock, his beard has already grown twice around his stone table. He and his servant drink wine, but their jug is never empty. A bird sits on the wine barrel, which occasionally flies out, checks on the state of the world, and then reports back to its master. Together with Wodan and his servant, a large army lives in the rock, practicing the art of warfare. So that the noise from outside cannot be heard, the god Donar causes appropriate (thunder) weather. When Wodan's beard has grown around the table three times, the wine jug will finally be empty, and Wodan will break out of the rock together with his army. It will be time for the final battle. Motifs of this story are very reminiscent of Norse-Germanic tales. In addition, there are speculations that the old Frankish family of the Walpoten is said to have owned a castle here. From the granite colossi, you have a wonderful distant view.

As can be read on the nearby information board, even Goethe himself was once very taken with the massive rock formations, even if this rock still had to make do without a viewing platform.
