When the state of Berlin became the owner, it was able to attract the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) as an investor. Investments of approximately six million euros were planned for the site. The plan was to convert the main building into an accessible youth hostel with around 450 beds by 2012; the other buildings were to be used as seminar areas and as the DJH's administrative offices.

The building complex at Marktstraße 9-13, now a listed historical monument, sustained only relatively minor damage during World War II; in particular, parts of the roof structure and the top floor of the main building burned down. During the GDR era, the buildings housed an engineering school for mechanical and electrical engineering. The police established a station in the former fire station. In 1990, the engineering school merged into the University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Technology (FHTW). With the subsequent relocation of the campus to Oberschöneweide and its transformation into the University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Economics (HTW), the original use of the buildings came to an end.
