Lago Bianco, Bernina Pass at 2234 meters The Lago Bianco is a reservoir at the Bernina Pass and is located in the area of the municipalities of Pontresina and Poschiavo. The lake is located directly at the pass at 2234 meters above sea level. The Lago Bianco is bordered by two dams on its north and south sides and is around three kilometers long and about 800m wide. When filled to its maximum, the depth of the Lago Bianco is over 50 meters. The reservoir on the Bernina Pass is fed by various mountain streams and glacier water, while the Cavagliasch in particular leaves the lake. The whitish, somewhat milky-looking Lago Bianco gets its name (in German "White Lake") from the inflow of sand and glacier water. The Bernina Hospice (Ospizio Bernina) is located on the western shore of Lago Bianco, and the Rhaetian Railway's train line - the Bernina Express - also runs directly along the shore. The Bernina Pass road is also located on the western side, but not directly on the lake shore. In cold winters, the lake can freeze over and in some years the beautiful black ice forms. When the reservoir is then opened by the authorities, nothing stands in the way of ice skating on Lago Bianco. Text / Source: Schweizersee.ch https://www.schweizersee.ch/lago_bianco_pontresina/

A little in the shadow of Lago Bianco but no less beautiful. We recommend seeing the reflection in the morning when there is still no wind.

The Lake Bianco region offers a high-alpine environment with significant elevation changes. Routes often traverse above 2,000 meters, featuring glacial lakes, mountain passes, and rugged peaks. You can expect a mix of challenging ascents and scenic descents, providing panoramic views of the surrounding Bernina Alps.
Yes, while many routes are challenging, there are moderate options. For example, the Lej Nair – Lago Bianco loop from Bernina Lagalb is a 4.9-mile (7.9 km) trail that leads through high-altitude lake scenery and is often completed in about 43 minutes. Another moderate option is the Lago Bianco – Bernina Pass loop from Bernina Diavolezza, which covers 13.8 km with moderate elevation.
The region is rich in natural and man-made attractions. You'll encounter the stunning Lago Bianco itself, the Lago Bianco Lakeside Trail, and the impressive Lago Bianco and Cambrena Glacier. The historic Rhaetian Railway and the Ospizio Bernina Railway Station are also notable sights along many routes.
Given the high-alpine environment and significant elevations, the best time for touring cycling around Lake Bianco is typically during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn (June to September). During this period, snow has usually melted from the higher passes, and weather conditions are generally more stable and pleasant for cycling.
Yes, many of the touring cycling routes around Lake Bianco are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the Bernina Pass – Pontresina Town Center loop from Ospizio Bernina and the View of Lago Bianco – Bernina Pass (2,330 m) loop from Ospizio Bernina.
The touring cycling routes around Lake Bianco are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.2 stars from over 70 reviews. Cyclists frequently praise the stunning panoramic mountain views, the unique high-alpine environment, and the challenging yet rewarding ascents and descents.
There are over 20 touring cycling routes available around Lake Bianco, offering a variety of distances and difficulty levels to suit different preferences and fitness levels.
Yes, the region is well-served by the Rhaetian Railway, which offers convenient access to various starting points for cycling routes. Stations like Ospizio Bernina and Bernina Lagalb are often used as access points, allowing cyclists to combine train travel with their rides.
Due to the high-alpine environment, weather conditions can change rapidly. It's advisable to bring layers of clothing, including a windproof and waterproof jacket, even in summer. Sun protection, sufficient water, snacks, and basic bike repair tools are also essential. Helmets are highly recommended for safety on these mountain routes.
While popular routes can see more traffic, exploring routes slightly off the main Bernina Pass road or opting for rides during off-peak hours (early mornings or weekdays) can offer a more tranquil experience. The region's vastness also means that even on popular routes, you can often find stretches of solitude, especially on longer, more challenging tours like the Bernina Pass – Passo del Bernina Ascent loop from Pozzulasc.
Given the high-alpine nature of the routes, refreshment stops can be sparse on some sections. However, key points like Ospizio Bernina, which is also a railway station, often have facilities including cafes or restaurants. It's always a good idea to carry enough water and snacks, especially on longer routes, and to check for available services along your chosen path beforehand.
