The Predel Fortress (Paßsperre Predil, Depot Oberbreth, Depot Predil) was one of six forts that formed the system of Carinthian forts. It stands a few hundred meters from the Predel Pass. The first fort was built during the Napoleonic Wars. During the war, it was burned down twice after fierce fighting. In 1848, it was decided to build a new one on the site of the old fortress. It served its purpose until 1880, when a commission found that the fortress no longer met modern military regulations, so it was converted into a military warehouse. It retained this function until the end of the First World War. Since no one maintained the building after the war, it fell into disrepair, so today only the relatively well-preserved walls can be seen.
