The place is located at an altitude of 900 m and is characterized by the Bleiberg mine, which was closed in 1991. Until the end of the First World War, the place, like the entire Kanaltal, belonged to Carinthia and was predominantly German-speaking. In addition, Raibl had a minority of Slovenian inhabitants due to mining, who came from the Koritnica Valley and went to work through the tunnel under the Predil Pass. In 1918, Raibl fell to Italy. After the resettlements under Mussolini, the place is almost exclusively Italian-speaking. Cave del Predil is today a fraction of the municipality of Tarvis and still had 2100 inhabitants in 1968. After the cessation of mining operations, the population decreased rapidly; in 1999, only 450 people lived in the place.

Raibl is the starting point of the road over the Predil Pass to Bovec (German: Flitsch) in the Slovenian Soča Valley, as well as over the Nevea Saddle and the Raccolana Valley to Chiusaforte. Raibl is the starting point for numerous mountain hikes in the western Julian Alps (Kanin area, Montasch and Jôf di Miezegruppe). The local mountain is the 2122 m high Raibler Seekopf (Cima di Lago). South of the village lies the cold, dark, mountain-framed Raibl Lake (Lago del Predil). Approximately in the middle of the northwest shore, before the First World War, stood the Austrian Raibl Fort, which secured the imperial border that ran through the Seebach Valley.
