In Gelenau, a manor house existed as early as 1256 under Heinricus de Gelene; this was the moated castle Hofteich. Another source mentions the manor house only in 1279 under Rudegerus de Geilnowe. The moated castle Hofteich is also known by the names Bühl, Hofinsel, Hofwall, Schloss, or Wallgraben and is located within the grounds of the manor estate. Over time, the manor house developed into a knight's estate, which was purchased by Friedrich von Schönberg in 1533. The estate remained in the family, although it changed hands several times. A manor house was built on the site of the moated castle, and the farmyard with the tenant's house was built on the mainland. When the manor house on the island became dilapidated, it was demolished around 1830. The park was redesigned into an English landscape garden. The tenant's house was the last building to be inhabited. Adolph von Schönberg was elevated to the rank of Baron in 1893 and retained ownership of the Gelenau manor until 1907. That year, the manor house was acquired by the municipality and used as its administrative headquarters. After 1945 There was no expropriation. The municipality continued to use the manor house as its administrative center. On display is an extensive collection of historical machinery, ranging from a 12-meter-long cotton knitting machine and winding machines to modern knitting machines. Many of the machines are still functional and will be demonstrated.
